The ECHL power rankings are in full swing for the 2022-23 season, and for the first time, there’s plenty of movement throughout the league’s 28 teams—albeit not at the very top.
Newfoundland remains on top with an undefeated stretch to start their season, followed by the league’s three other unbeaten teams, who all moved up some spots thanks to that early success. The ECHL power rankings are in full swing for the 2022-23 season, and for the first time, there’s plenty of movement throughout the league’s 28 teams—albeit not at the very top.

1) Newfoundland Growlers (5-0-0) (Last Week: 1)
The Growlers were an easy choice to keep in the top spot after another clean weekend in their series against Canadian rival Trois-Rivieres. They outscored the Lions 9-4 in a two-game sweep on the road.
Newfoundland also has the league’s top two leading point scorers in Isaac Johnson (5-6—11) and Zach O’Brien (1-9—10)
2) Worcester Railers (5-0-0) (Last Week: 5)
Worcester put themselves in the conversation for the number one position, staying hot with three more wins this past week—two against Adirondack and one against Trois-Rivieres.
The Railers have four of their five wins over the Thunder this season. Newfoundland ultimately got the nod for the variety of their victories.
3) Cincinnati Cyclones (4-0-0) (Last Week: 9)
Jason Payne’s Cyclones have proven to be an early-season powerhouse, with only one of their four wins decided by less than three goals.
Payne was on the right end of a historic matchup earlier this past week, beating Joel Martin’s Kalamazoo Wings, 2-1, in Wednesday's first-ever meeting of two Black head coaches in pro hockey history.
4) Savannah Ghost Pirates (4-0-0) (Last Week: 7)
Savannah has emerged as one of the league’s best early-season stories, staying undefeated through last weekend. It hasn’t been easy, however.
Both of their road games this past week against Fort Wayne required extra time—they won in a shootout on Friday, and in overtime on Saturday.
5) Maine Mariners (4-2-0) (Last Week: 11)
The Mariners have had a busy slate thus far, one of just two teams to play six games in the first two weeks. The other? Norfolk, who they beat up on this past weekend by taking two out of three in Virginia.
6) Idaho Steelheads (3-1-0) (Last Week: 3)
Only a one-goal loss to Utah on Friday keeps Idaho from the ranks of the unbeaten teams. They quickly erased the bad taste of that defeat with a shutout win over the Grizzlies the next night.
7) Wichita Thunder (2-1-1) (Last Week: 22)
After a season-opening loss, Wichita has captured five out of a possible six points. That includes a split of a two-game road slate in Allen this past weekend after losing the opener in overtime.
8) South Carolina Stingrays (3-1-0) (Last Week: 2)
South Carolina falls a bit in the standings despite a 3-1 start to the year, but with a bit of recency bias here: they suffered a 9-3 blowout loss in Greenville on Saturday for their first visit to the “L” column in the standings.
9) Indy Fuel (3-1-0) (Last Week: 4)
Indy had won their first three games of the season before suffering a close, 3-2 setback to the Reading Royals on Sunday. Alex Wideman is still tied for third among all league forwards with nine points in his first four games.
10) Florida Everblades (2-1-0) (Last Week: 14)
What would an early season edition of the rankings be without Florida in the top ten? The ‘Blades sneak in with two straight wins after a season-opening loss to Atlanta, including last Saturday’s shutout triumph over the Icemen.
