Originally from Russia, Assakalov has competed his entire Greco-Roman senior level career for Uzbekistan. He is a two-time Asian Championships gold medalist and a two-time podium finisher at the World Championships. Assakalov also represented Uzbekistan in the 2016 Rio Olympics at 85 kg.
