Women's freestyle wrestling was added to the 2004 Athens Olympics. Four women's weights were contested with Patricia Miranda (48 kg), Tela O'Donnell (55 kg), Sara McMann (63 kg), and Toccara Montgomery (72 kg) comprising the inaugural U.S. team.

The United States entered the Senior Women's World Championships for the first time in 1989. Since that time there have been 38 women who have combined for 93 World and Olympic medals, including 10 women who have won a total of 23 World/Olympic titles.

The countdown continues as FloWrestling releases its top 100 greatest American wrestlers of all time. The inaugural episode with 10 wrestlers was released on November 4 and will end with the announcement of the greatest wrestler of all-time on January 10, 2022.
