- 5 Midwest D2/D3 Basketball Teams To Watch During The 2026-2027 Season
Some teams have obvious beasts on the roster; others could be overlooked if they haven’t seen much national success in recent years.
Here are five DII players to watch for breakout seasons: two men’s players and three women’s players.
Men’s Basketball Players To Watch
Amare Campbell (Jr., G), Cal State East Bay (CCAA)
Amare Campbell is ready to make his own name at Cal State East Bay. During the 2025-26 season, he shared the court with his older brother Tyree, the NABC Division II Player of the Year. Now it’s Amare’s turn to shine.
Amare appeared in all 34 games last season, averaging 20.1 minutes per game. He scored at least 20 points twice, including a season-high 23 against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Pioneers went 22-0 in CCAA play and finished 33-1 overall. With eight seniors departing after the season, Campbell could provide a veteran presence for the Pioneers.
Jesse Napgezek (So., G), Michigan Tech (GLIAC)
The Wausau, Wis., native made an immediate impact in his first season with the Huskies, averaging 7.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. During Michigan Tech’s NCAA Midwest Region Tournament run, Napgezek averaged 18 points per game and shot 52.4% from the field. He also went 31-for-43 from the free-throw line (72.1%). He scored a season-best 20 points in the Huskies’ first tournament game against Lake Erie.

Women’s Basketball Players To Watch
Anayya Davis (So., G/F), Grand Valley State (GLIAC)
A key player off the bench, Anayya Davis is poised to take on a bigger role for the back-to-back national champions. She played in all 37 games during the 2025-26 season, recording 101 points, 69 rebounds, 37 steals and 30 assists while shooting 76.2% from the free-throw line. In the Lakers’ Elite Eight win over Carson-Newman, Davis had six points and five rebounds. With no seniors on this year’s team, she’ll be a veteran presence on the court.

Majik Esquivel (Jr., G), Angelo State (LSC)
Majik Esquivel, a Lone Star Conference preseason player to watch, is ready to shine this season. She’s one of six juniors on a team that returns just one senior, and will be counted on for her accuracy at the free-throw line and all-around play. Last season, Esquivel averaged 17.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, recorded 49 steals and shot 81.8% from the free-throw line.
Jenna Slates (So., F), Ashland (G-MAC)
Reigning G-MAC Freshman of the Year Jenna Slates led Ashland in double-doubles as a rookie, recording 17 in 27 games. That tied her for 10th in Division II. The 6-foot forward averaged 16.1 points, 11.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 49.6% from the field.
