Some ghosts from college football’s past are making an appearance this Halloween weekend.
South Dakota is trying to end a 26-year road drought, Alabama A&M has four years of Magic City Classic losses to avenge, and Eastern Washington is preparing to play its 100th game on the famous red turf.

The FCS Week 9 schedule on Saturday, Oct. 31, brings more than conference standings and playoff implications. Here are three things to know.
South Dakota Hasn’t Won In Brookings Since 2000

The last time South Dakota won a football game in Brookings, Bill Clinton was president. Twenty-six years later, the Coyotes are still searching for another road win against South Dakota State.
No. 6 South Dakota (7-2) visits No. 5 South Dakota State (6-2) on Saturday in the Interstate Series, a rivalry dating to May 1889, six months before South Dakota officially became a state.
The Jackrabbits lead the series 32-14-3 in Brookings and have won all six home meetings since the rivalry resumed at the Division I level in 2012. But the Coyotes won last year’s meeting 24-17 in Vermillion and enter Saturday fresh off a 26-23 overtime victory over North Dakota.
Ending the Brookings drought would make this candy-filled weekend particularly sweet for South Dakota.
The Magic City Classic Turns 85

The Magic City Classic has brought Alabama State and Alabama A&M together since 1945. On Halloween, they’ll meet for the 85th edition of one of HBCU football’s biggest annual traditions.
The rivalry takes over Birmingham’s historic Legion Field, with a downtown parade, enormous tailgates and the halftime Battle of the Bands featuring Alabama A&M’s Marching Maroon & White and Alabama State’s Mighty Marching Hornets.
Alabama A&M also has a four-game losing streak in the Classic to end. Alabama State won last year’s matchup 56-13 in front of 69,372 fans.
Eastern Washington’s 100th Red-Turf Game Brings Everything Full Circle

On Sept. 18, 2010, Eastern Washington beat Montana 36-27 in the first game on the red turf at Roos Field. Sixteen years later, the Eagles will host the Grizzlies for the field’s 100th game.
Eastern has gone 75-24 on the red turf, and Montana didn’t earn its first win there until 2024. No. 14 Montana (5-3) returns to Cheney after two straight Big Sky losses, with a chance to extend its record of 29 FCS playoff appearances on the line.
Eastern Washington (2-6) has struggled this season, but the Eagles lead the Big Sky in first downs per game at 23.9 and have converted 29 of 31 red-zone opportunities.
The Eagles will also recognize Native American Heritage Month with Salish helmet decals and a national anthem sung in both English and Salish.
For the 100th game on the red turf, the opponent couldn’t be more fitting.
