A Halloween fright is brewing in Albany, N.Y. UAlbany is hosting “Spooky Saturday,” but the real surprise may be the two teams taking the field: a year after both finished 2-10, Campbell and the Great Danes are nationally ranked and in the CAA championship race.

No. 15 Campbell (7-1, 4-0 CAA) visits No. 25 UAlbany (5-3, 3-1 CAA) Saturday, Oct. 31, at noon ET on FloCollege. The costumes are optional. The stakes are real. Here are five things to know before kickoff.

1. Campbell's Dream Season Faces A Scary Reality Check

Campbell is enjoying its best season since the program returned in 2008. The Camels earned a school-record seventh win with a 35-6 victory at Maine on Oct. 24. Under third-year head coach Braxton Harris, they have won five straight and remain undefeated against FCS opponents. Their only loss came against Florida on Sept. 12.

Quarterback Kamden Sixkiller has thrown for 2,349 yards and 18 touchdowns through eight games. Against Maine, he set a school record with 450 passing yards, completing 29 of 44 attempts for three touchdowns and finding 13 different receivers. Jyron Waiters added seven catches for 155 yards and a 59-yard touchdown.

The defense held Maine to six points, two third-down conversions on 17 attempts and forced two interceptions. But the schedule gets tougher from here. After wins over North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Towson and Maine, Campbell closes the regular season against UAlbany, Stony Brook, Elon and Monmouth. Three of those teams enter Week 9 with winning conference records, including undefeated CAA leader Monmouth.

Campbell has spent two months proving it can win. This stretch could determine whether the Camels can contend for a championship.

2. UAlbany Has Risen From The Dead Under Tom Perkovich

After a 2-10 season, a coaching change and a 2-3 start, UAlbany’s season looked bleak in late September. First-year head coach Tom Perkovich came to the Great Danes after a successful decade at Division III Susquehanna, where he won four consecutive conference championships from 2022-25. The transition to the CAA, though, wasn’t immediate: UAlbany won its opener against New Hampshire, then lost three of its next four, including a 22-0 shutout against Princeton.

Perkovich later handed offensive play-calling duties to Sean Pearson, allowing him to focus on managing the team. UAlbany has since won three straight, averaging 38 points against Delaware State, Stony Brook and Rhode Island. The Great Danes beat Stony Brook 48-31 in the Battle for the Golden Apple, then handed defending CAA champion Rhode Island a 38-21 loss on Oct. 24, ending the Rams’ 17-game home winning streak.

Perkovich told the Albany Times Union, “I’ll throw myself under the bus,” explaining that his responsibilities had begun stretching him too thin. UAlbany is now No. 25 in the AFCA poll and one conference loss behind Campbell.

3. Kamden Sixkiller Meets A Defense With Some Tricks Of Its Own

A quarterback named Sixkiller playing on Halloween? The scriptwriters didn’t have to work hard for that one. But UAlbany’s defense has a few tricks of its own. Sixkiller has been one of the CAA’s most productive passers, leading an offense averaging more than 300 passing yards per game. The Great Danes allow about 203 passing yards and 19 points per game.

Linebacker Jamari Young is coming off a strong performance against Rhode Island, with three sacks, four tackles for loss and two pass breakups. He earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. UAlbany has 21 sacks through eight games, compared with Campbell’s 15.

If the Great Danes can pressure Sixkiller without giving up coverage, they could slow down Campbell’s offense. Give him too much time, though, and it could be a long afternoon for UAlbany’s secondary.

4. Rahshan La Mons Is Becoming A Nightmare For Opposing Defenses

Rhode Island hadn’t lost at home in 17 games before Rahshan La Mons rushed for 196 yards and three touchdowns against the Rams. The junior running back followed Perkovich from Susquehanna, where he ran for 2,518 yards and 30 touchdowns over the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Their success has carried over to the FCS level.

La Mons scored on runs of 36 and 65 yards in the second half against Rhode Island. His 65-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter helped UAlbany restore a two-score lead. The Great Danes have rushed for 480 yards over their last two games, giving the passing attack a strong complement.

Campbell will be a tougher test. The Camels allow only 110 rushing yards per game and have been particularly effective against the run.

5. The CAA Championship Race Is Getting Crowded

Monmouth leads the CAA at 5-0, with Campbell close behind at 4-0. UAlbany, Bryant and Stony Brook are all 3-1. With one automatic FCS playoff bid available, there’s little room for error, and defending champion Rhode Island is struggling to keep pace.

A Campbell win would preserve the Camels’ undefeated conference record and strengthen their case for a first FCS playoff appearance. A UAlbany win would move the Great Danes to 4-1 in CAA play and give them a major boost in the playoff race after their victory over Rhode Island.

Perkovich called the Rhode Island game “as big of a game as has probably been played in a little bit here, other than in ’23,” referring to UAlbany’s run to the FCS semifinals that year.

Saturday’s result won’t settle the race, especially with Campbell and Monmouth still scheduled to meet Nov. 21. But it could shape which teams control their playoff paths entering the final month of the regular season.
