The Gagliardi Trophy race continued to develop in Week 8, with several Division III standouts delivering performances that strengthened their cases for the award.

From a quarterback powering an unbeaten team with his legs to a high-scoring offense putting up another dominant performance, the weekend offered plenty to watch as the regular season moves toward November.

SUNY Cortland's Mike Rescigno and North Central's Garret Wilson headlined the Week 8 performances, while established contenders such as Bethel's (MN) Cooper Drews remain worth monitoring.

With another slate of conference games on tap Saturday, the next opportunity to build an award resume is right around the corner.

The Gagliardi Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division III football. Athletic achievement, academics and community service all factor into the selection process.

Who Impressed in Week 8?

Mike Rescigno, QB, SUNY Cortland

Rescigno continued to make his case as one of Division III's most dynamic players in Cortland's 28-20 victory over St. John Fisher Football.

The junior quarterback rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, leading the Red Dragons to a hard-fought conference win. He also completed six of 16 passes for 104 yards, although he threw an interception.

Rescigno's impact on the ground proved decisive. All three of his touchdowns came on rushing plays, including a 2-yard score in the fourth quarter that helped Cortland hold off St. John Fisher.

Cortland improved to 7-0 with the victory, keeping Rescigno and the Red Dragons firmly in the Division III spotlight. His ability to create offense as both a passer and a runner continues to make him an intriguing Gagliardi Trophy candidate.

Garret Wilson, QB, North Central

Wilson helped North Central bounce back from its loss to Wheaton College Illinois with a dominant performance in a 62-7 victory over Carroll (WI) Football.

The junior quarterback completed 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns. He added a career-high 87 rushing yards on nine carries, finishing with 366 yards of total offense.

Wilson's performance showed how effectively he can influence a game in multiple ways. His continued production will be important as the Cardinals pursue a strong finish to the regular season.

Gagliardi Trophy Contenders To Watch in Week 9

Mike Rescigno, QB, SUNY Cortland

Rescigno gets another opportunity to build his case when Cortland hosts Alfred State College on Saturday.

His three-touchdown rushing performance against St. John Fisher demonstrated his ability to take over a game even when the passing attack is limited. If Rescigno continues to produce at that level while keeping Cortland unbeaten, his name should remain prominent in the Gagliardi Trophy conversation.

The Red Dragons have won all seven of their games this season, and Rescigno's dual-threat ability remains central to their success.

Garret Wilson, QB, North Central

Wilson and North Central return home Saturday to face Carthage College after their 55-point victory over Carroll.

Wilson's three passing touchdowns and 87 rushing yards in Week 8 showed the versatility that makes him a compelling candidate. Another efficient performance against Carthage would give him additional momentum as the Cardinals work through the final weeks of the regular season.

Cooper Drews, QB, Bethel

Drews remains a player to watch as Bethel continues its push through the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The quarterback has already demonstrated his ability to contribute as both a passer and a runner. In Bethel's Week 7 win over St. Olaf College, he threw for 226 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 54 yards and two scores, accounting for five touchdowns.

The Royals host Concordia-Minnesota on Saturday, giving Drews another opportunity to keep the offense rolling and strengthen his case.

The Gagliardi Trophy Race Enters Its Next Stage

With the regular season entering its final stretch, individual performances and team success will continue to shape the Gagliardi Trophy conversation.

The award considers more than statistics alone, but consistent production in meaningful games can help separate the leading candidates as the season progresses.
