Instead, the Mustangs suffered one of their most damaging losses of the 2026 season.

Utah Tech, which entered the day 0-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play, defeated Cal Poly 43-26 on Oct. 24 in San Luis Obispo. The result gave the Trailblazers their first win of the season and dropped the Mustangs to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in Big Sky play.
And this was not a game many saw coming.
Cal Poly entered the matchup as a 17.5-point favorite. By the end of the afternoon, the Mustangs had lost by 17.
That is a 34.5-point swing from the betting line — and one of the clearest ways to show just how surprising the result was.
Utah Tech Delivers A Stunning Turnaround Against Cal Poly Football
Before Saturday, Utah Tech had struggled on both sides of the ball.
The Trailblazers entered the game averaging just 14.9 points per game, the lowest scoring average in the Big Sky. Against Cal Poly, they scored 43.
For a team still searching for its first win entering Week 8, the offensive breakout was dramatic.
The result becomes even more surprising when looking at what Cal Poly brought into the game.
Running back Jaden Green entered the weekend leading the FCS in all-purpose yards per game at 163.5, while quarterback Anthony Grigsby Jr. had already thrown for 1,857 yards and 16 touchdowns this season.
This was not a Cal Poly team lacking proven production.
But on Saturday, it was Utah Tech that delivered the breakthrough performance.
First Meeting Since 2009
Saturday's game also marked the first football meeting since 2009 between Utah Tech and Cal Poly.
Utah Tech made sure the latest installment of the series would be memorable.
The Trailblazers not only earned their first victory of the year, but they did it on the road against a Cal Poly team that had shown it could beat quality competition earlier this month.
Just two weeks ago, the Mustangs upset then-No. 16 Idaho State on the road, 25-24. At that point, Cal Poly looked like a team capable of making noise in the Big Sky.
Now the Mustangs have lost back-to-back games, first to Northern Colorado and then to previously winless Utah Tech.
What The Loss Means For Cal Poly
The timing of the loss is what makes it especially costly.
Cal Poly's final three regular-season games come against a brutal closing stretch: at Montana State on Oct. 31, home against Northern Arizona on Nov. 7 and at UC Davis on Nov. 21.
That means the Mustangs may have let their best remaining opportunity for a win slip away.
What once looked like a promising push in the Big Sky has suddenly turned into a much steeper climb.
For Utah Tech, Saturday was the long-awaited breakthrough.
For Cal Poly, it may be the loss that changed the season.
