Stony Brook Stops Towson's Tenacious Comeback Attempt

The Towson Tigers were dropped in a hole early by the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves that they could not climb out of before time expired.

Both quarterbacks played exceptional ball, with Stony Brook's Quinn Boy throwing for 175 yards and two touchdowns, while Towson's Jacob Davis had 337 yards in the air, 66 on the ground and two touchdowns of his own.

It was, however, a pivotal fourth quarter interception by Boyd with the Tigers trailing by ten points that helped keep the Seawolves on top for good.

Stony Brooks runs their record up to 4-2 while keeping a 2-0 record in the CAA, while Towson suffers their seventh loss of the season, going 0-7 for the first time since 1991.

Stony Brook now holds a 5-3 advantage over the Tigers over their last eight meetings.

Rapid Recap From Stony Brook's Win Over Towson

    Stony Brook 31, Towson 24

Stony Brook raced to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter thanks to three scores on the Seawolves’ first four drives. Quinn Boyd connected with James Dely and Seth Sweitzer for touchdowns, and the Seawolf defense did its job, forcing three punts and recovering a fumble to set the offense up for success.

Towson staunched the bleeding in the second quarter. Late in the half, freshman QB Jacob Davis found Aaron Enterline in the open field, and Enterline did the rest, finding the end zone and breathing fresh life into the Tigers.

The Tigers squandered their first opportunity after halftime but then regained their composure, going 82 yards in just 92 seconds to pull within three points of Stony Brook.

The Seawolves answered with a dagger in the form of a kickoff return for a touchdown, as DeMario Crawford went 90 yards for the backbreaking score.

Davis and the Tigers remained undaunted, but so did Boyd and the Seawolves. Both teams added scores before a pivotal interception thrown by Davis allowed Stony Brook to shut the door on Towson’s comeback attempt.

Stony Brook improves to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while Towson suffers another loss to fall to 0-7.

FINAL Stony Brook 31, Towson 24

Howl at the Sea Moon, Stony Brook Recovers Onside Attempt, Cementing Seawolf Victory

The Tigers lineup for an onside kick. They don't get the bounce they want and the Seawolves recover. They can't stop the clock so that shut drive the final nail into the coffin.

The Tigers will drop to 0-7 for the first time since 1991, while Stony Brook improves to 4-2, with a 2-0 record in the CAA.

Towson Gets a Field Goal, Now Needs a Miracle

The first play on Towson's do-or-die drive is a run up the gut for 10 yards. An incomplete deep ball is then followed by a pass in the flat to CJ Schaeffer, who is tackled in bounds, but the clock is mooted by the two minute warning.

Another pass to Schaeffer in the first play after the break and it's 2nd and 3 with 1:51 to go as Schaeffer managed to get out of bounds. Davis is pressured on the next play and will get tackled as he scrambles for daylight for a short loss. The play was far more costly in time than it was in yards.

A first down provided a glimmer of hope before it's dashed by another sack. Towson is forced to burn its final timeout as it stares down 2nd and 10 from their own 27 with just 68 seconds left in regulation.

Hook and lateral for 14 yards as the Tigers start pulling from their trickeration playbook. Nine more yards from Enterline gives the Tigers a first down with 57 seconds to go.

Pressure from Stony Brook forces Davis to run and he goes down in bounds short of the first down and precious seconds tick away. Holding on an incomplete pass and Towson has the ball at midfield with 30 to go and 3 downs left in the series.

Pass over the middle to reset the chains and Towson spikes it at the 25 yard line. 14 seconds on the clock. Out comes the field goal team. Towson's plan is to make this, recover an onside kickand pray for a miracle.

Step one complete, Towson pulls with seven.

Towson Takes Over for Do-or-Die Drive from Their Own 2 Yard Line

Except runs up the middle from the Seawolves as they get the ball back with a mandate to run out the clock. Both teams have all their timeouts.

Stony Brook is indeed running the ball and the Towson deffense is getting stops. Those stops are coming in bounds, however, and the Tigers use up two timeouts in effort to give their offense as much time as possible.

Stony Brook will punt with 2:53 on the clock.

Brilliant special teams play by the Seawolves as a punt pins the Tigers down on their own two yard line.

Tigers Punt, Seawolves With a Chance to Shut the Door Permanently

Towson defense is now being counted on to step up. They get a three-and-out but the clock has rounded the 6 minute mark. Time is on the side of the Seawolves.

Towson gets the ball back at their own 22 with 5:46 on the clock. The Tigers need two score and don't have a lot of time to work. Big sack for Stony Brook as the Seawolves look to shut the lid on this football game. Stony Brook follows up the sack with a tackle for a loss on a sniffed-out screen pass.

Towson elects to punt with under four minutes to go. Head Coach pete Shinnick decided it was fourth and too long and will put his trust in his defense to get a quick stop.

Costly INT Puts Stony Brook in the Drivers Seat

Pressure is the Tiger offense. This is a critical drive to keep their hopes alive. Davis is again doing in on the ground, with a 19 yard pick up to push the pigskin past the midway point. But then Ryan Barrett of Stony Brook throws cold water on that drive just as it was igniting, intercepting a pass over the middle.

It's Davis' first interception of his career and it came at about the worst point possible, though it should be noted that a Towson comeback would not even have been possible at this point without Davis exceptional play throughout the day.

Boyd Delivers as Tiger Comeback Odds Get Slimmer

Quinn Boyd has led the Seawolves admirably all game long. Can he take Stony Brook in for another comeback-crushing score? A 21 yard gain on third down is a good start for the sophomore quarterback from California. The next first down comes from a bruising ground game that also runs precious time off the clock.

Stony Brook now has the ball on Towson 25. The Seawolves are bending the Tigers' defense. Can they break them on this drive? Three more runs has the clock down to under 10 minutes and a 4th and 1 decision for head coach Billy Cosh.

That may become an easier decision as the refs are going to take a closer look to see if Jeremiah Coney got the first down. And it is a first! Big swing in Stony Brook's favor.

On second down, Davis had Sweitzer in the corner of the end zone but the senior reciever open but he couldn't haul it in. Boyd said, no bother, I'll take it from here. And Quinn Boyd breaks through the Towson defense and dives into the end zone for the backbreaker the Seawolves were looking for!

Towson could not get the stop when desperately needed it. The PAT puts Stony Brook by ten, where they have been a few other times this game.

Stony Brook on the Hunt For A Backbreaker at the End of the 3rd Quarter

But how will Stony Brook respond? With a three-and-out. Towson will get the ball with the chance to take the lead. They'll have it at the 20 with 3:44 in the third.

Sublime throw and catch from Davis to Jacob Zollar to start the drive but it's coming back due to holding. If the Seawolves can bring the pressure like they did in the first half they'll have a chance to snatch momentum back from the Tigers. And that's what they do on third down, forcing a broken play and a two yard loss. Towson will punt.

On the next drive, Sweitzer lunges for a first down and just barely gets it, which will take this game to the final quarter. Victory is up for grabs! We'll see who secures it in fourth!

Someone Flipped the Scoring Switch at Halftime

Jacon Davis remains undaunted. Not even a whiff of daunt on Towson's freshman QB. He airs out another deep ball that Cleveland Charlton goes full extension for, and Towson is threatening deep in Stony Brook territory.

Want to see it? Well here it is!

Towson now with a crucial 3rd and 7 on the 23 yard line. Enter: Enterline. Agent zero with a few stunning moves after the catch and nearly punches his way into the end zone but is ruled down at the one.

The Tigers run on the next play, but Battles coughs it up, only for Davis to pick it up and slip into the end zone! Scratch that, Battles was ruled down at the three. But no matter, Xavier Pugh totes the rock on the next play and plows is way in for the score.

The Tigers are back to within a field goal. No lead changes but plenty of drama as both teams ping pong for supremacy.

Stony Brook Answers With a Dagger to the Heart

Tiger fans turned crestfallen as Stony Brook fans rejoiced in a kick return for a touchdown. DaMario Crawford with an absolute dagger. He goes the distance and paces the Seawolves back to a ten point margin.

Towson Responds To Pull Within 3

Towson's defense steps up after their offense stalled out. A three-and-out forces a Stony Brook punt. Tigers will take over on their own 18.

So far most of the Towson offense has been generated by their freshman QB. Davis has 84 passing and 60 rushing yards, which leads the team in both categories. He'll pick up a big chunk of passing yards on third down, heaving it deep to Cleveland Charlton, who hauls it, picking up a few more after the catch. The very next play is a pass to Pugh in the flat who's got daylight ahead of him. Pugh chugs into the endzone and Towson scores again!

The kick after slaps another point on the scoreboard and the Tigers are a field goal away from tying the score. Momentum has definitely shifted as Stony Brook led 17-0 in the second quarter.

Tigers Squander Opportunity After Fourth Down Failure

Stony Brook kicked off to start the game so now Towson will reciprocate to begin the second half.

Seawolves' first drive goes nowhere, and they'll punt following three plays and five yards of offense. Towson receive the punt in solid field position at their own 41.

Jacob Davis keeps it, and after a nifty move at the line, he'll scamper deep into Stony Brook territory. Stony Brook stuffs their next three plays, but Towson will go for it on 4th and 12 on the 26. Enterline is targeted with enough yards for the first down but the ball slips through his hands and Stony Brook regains possession.

Towson Gets on the Board and We Have a Game Again

Consider that goose egg shattered! Number zero in program, Aaron Enterline, wipes the zero from the scoreboard with a diving, toe-dragging, back-of-the-endzone catch. It wasn't quite must-score time for the Tigers, but it was approaching it.

XP is good and the Tigers cut the lead down to 10, salvaging what could have been a disastrous half for the home team.

Seawolves have one timeout and 1:39 on the clock on their own 23.

A tackle for a loss and now Towson is thinking maybe they'll get another crack at the endzone before the half. Another negative rushing play for Stony Brook makes it 3rd and 17 with 50 seconds left as Towson calls time. Draw play up the middle moves Stony Brook two yards shy of the first. Towson calls their last time out with 40 ticks left on the clock.

The Tigers get the ball back and drive to their own 46 yard line, spiking the ball with 2 seconds left and a hail mary incoming for the last play of the half. Davis launches a missile that lands just inside the end zone, incomplete, amidst a gaggle of players from both teams.

Ten point lead for Stony Brook as this CAA slugfest will take an extended break.

Tigers Pull Within Striking Distance In Pivotal Drive

What can the Tigers do to stop the bleeding? They've got the ball on their own 19 with 9:38 left in the half. A penalty and a couple of runs get the Tigers to their own 43 but that's all they'll manage as they are forced to punt again.

Boyd continues to slice up Towson's pass defense, and the Seawolves matriculate the ball to midfield on the next possession with 5:15 left in the half.

The next series goes much more favorably for the Tigers, as they get their first big third down stop, and a badly needed one at that. Stony Brook punts after being driven back to their own 38.

Towson has 3:35 to break that goose egg off the scoreboard before halftime.

Davis getting it down with the his arm and his feet as he scrambles to the Stony Brook 23 with 2:20. Time out Stony Brook. The last play before the two-minute warning. Let's enjoy these ads together before action resumes.

Seawolves Score Again, Crab Feast In Danger of Ruin

Towson's offense is back on the field. They badly need a score here to stop sinking into the quicksand they were stuck in for most of the first quarter.

A deep ball from Davis eludes his receiver's grasp but a pass interference call moves the ball close to midfield, close to the expertly painted Doc the Tiger mascot.

You may be asking yourself what 'Family Weekend' entailed at Towson. Well, at least one component was a crab feast, under a tent in the stadium. Towson, located just north of Baltimore, Maryland, knows that nothing goes together better than crab cakes and football, naturally.

Unfortunately for the crab meat enjoyers, the Tigers' backfield has become a feast for the Seawolves' defense, and Towson is forced to punt after a sack on third down. Stony Brook gets the ball back on their own 13 with 13:00 left in the second quarter.

James Dely has already had a day and it's just getting started. A deep ball from Boyd has the Seawolves threatening in Tiger territory again. Towson needed a big stop on the next series but a screen to Hester on third down put a crimp in those plans. The Tigers stand the Seawolves down on the next series and Stonny Brook will attempt a 40 yard field goal.

A snap from the hash marks and a kick through the uprights extends the Seawolves' lead to 17.

Stony Brook Capitalizes on Towson Turnover, Boyd Throws For 2nd TD of the First

Towson will get a chance to respond starting at the 20.

Pressure from the Seawolves stymies the Tigers and they go three and out. Stony Brook fair catches a punt at their own 25. The Tigers' defense stiffens up and the Seawolves are forced to punt after three plays.

Potential fumble by the Tigers is currently under review. Tough to see much in the video as the ball did squirt free but it was in the midst of a scrum. Not sure if Xavier Pugh was down or not. And the zebras say he was not. Seawolves recover the ball deep in Tiger territory!

On the second snap, Towson commits a costly defensive pass interference and Stony Brook gets a fresh set of downs at the 24 yard line. Boyd links with Seth Sweitzer who picks up some YAC and hurdles into the air at the one yard line, gets flipped head over heels and lands in the endzone for the Seawolves second tuddy of the first quarter.

Take a look at Sweitzer's aerial maneuvers in the tweet below.

Seawolves Draw First Blood On Their Opening Drive

Towson starts true freshman Jacob Davis at quarterback as starter Andrew Indorf is out with an injury.

Davis moves the Tigers swiftly to the 50 yard line before the Seawolves pick up their first sack of the game. A screen pass on third down is sniffed out and the Tigers take a loss on third down as their opening drive stalls out on their own 43.

Stony Brook's first drive of the game will begin on the 23. Seawolf QB Quinn Boyd airs it out deep on the opening snap but it's not in the vicinity of his intended receiver. The NCAA leader in rushing touchdowns, Seawolf CJ Hester, gets positive yardage on the next play. The Seawolves are now up to the 50.

Stony Brook runs it up the middle a couyple of times which sets up a QB roll out that advances the Seawolves deep into enemy territory.

Seawolves are on the board on the next play as Bpyd connects for a touchdown! Extra point is good Stony Brook has an early seven point lead.
