The Norfolk Admirals enter the 2026-27 ECHL season in an unusual position. As of Sept. 21, Norfolk's NHL and AHL affiliates were both listed as TBD in the ECHL's official directory, making the Admirals different from the league's clubs with established organizational development ladders.
Norfolk plays at Norfolk Scope and is led by head coach Jeff Carr, with Chris Blaisuis serving as assistant coach. The current Admirals began ECHL play in 2015-16 when the Bakersfield Condors membership relocated to Norfolk.

The Admirals went 30-38-4-0 with 64 points and missed the playoffs in 2025-26. Now, their attempt to return to contention comes with another intriguing question: how will Norfolk build its roster and create opportunities without a currently listed NHL or AHL parent organization?

Why Prospect Fans Should Watch Norfolk Admirals
Norfolk does not currently have the traditional NHL-to-AHL-to-ECHL pathway that defines most of the league. As of Sept. 21, both levels of the Admirals' affiliation structure remained TBD, meaning there is no legitimate NHL organization to attach to Norfolk entering the preseason.
That uncertainty creates its own prospect-watching storyline.
Rather than tracking assignments from one parent organization, fans can monitor Admirals players attempting to earn opportunities elsewhere, including potential AHL opportunities. Transactions also will be important as Carr and his staff build a roster without a currently listed parent organization.
Whether Norfolk eventually announces an affiliation is another question to follow, but no future partnership should be assumed. For now, the Admirals offer a different type of ECHL development story: a team attempting to improve from a 30-win season while players pursue opportunities up the professional ladder.
