In Week 3 of D2 football, we saw several shutouts, multiple teams with 50+ points and a whole lot of upsets. Here's what we learned.

In Week 3 of D2 football, we saw several shutouts, multiple teams with 50+ points and a whole lot of upsets.

If you're anything like my parents, you like to make things a learning experience. So, without further ado, here are three things we learned in Week 3 of D2 football:

The GLIAC & G-MAC Greats Are Here To Stay

Roosevelt, Grand Valley State, Davenport, Findlay and Northwood - in no particular order. These five teams have impressed since Week 0 and I doubt that will stop anytime soon.

Roosevelt has shocked the nation by remaining undefeated through four weeks of action. Mind you, this is a team that went 2-8 last season.

Their most recent win came at the expense of UW-Stout, who crumbled in a 31-10 decision to the Lakers. In their home opener, Roosevelt totaled 425 yards of offense, 248 of which were commandeered by QB Justin Bland. The Lakers defense forced two Blue Devils fumbles, tallied 18 pass breakups and held UWS to just 65 rushing yards.

Roosevelt Football Dominates UW-Stout 31-10, Moves To 4-0

Next up, the other Lakers. No. 7 Grand Valley State put up a program-record 96 unanswered points against NAIA Judson (Ill.) in Week 3. They opened with 35 points in the first quarter and never stopped rolling. 746 offensive yards and zero GVSU punts later, the Lakers picked up their fourth win of the season to remain undefeated and close out the non-conference season.

Another GLIAC team that continuously solidifies its spot in the nation’s eyes is Davenport. With a 42-7 road win at Northern Michigan, the Panthers are still undefeated with a 4-0 record headed into conference play. Davenport recorded seven sacks in the battle, limiting Northern Michigan to just 210 offensive yards while putting up 374 of their own.

No. 8 Findlay and No. 11 Northwood are two Great Midwest Athletic Conference Football (G-MAC) teams that are not messing around. The two opened up conference play in Week 3 and both walked away with wins to remain undefeated. Findlay traveled to Kentucky Wesleyan for a 10 a.m. ET matchup and dominated the Panthers 64-0. The margin of victory is the largest since a 70-0 victory against Lindenwood in 1994, while the total is the most since scoring 75 against Alderson Broaddus in 2019.

Northwood did not score nearly as many points, but had a much more competitive win over G-MAC foe Hillsdale. So, how did the Timberwolves manage a 10-7 victory? Hillsdale had to settle for a field goal attempt in their final drive of the game with just 17 seconds remaining. However, Tyler Marrogy destroyed the Chargers’ dreams of winning the Riepma Cup as he blocked the game-tying attempt, ultimately giving Northwood the victory. QB Ethan Hamby broke the program record for career completions in the win, standing at 333 as a junior. 

Central Washington Is So Back

About time!

After two consecutive losses against two elite programs, Central Washington has finally secured a win. In Week 1, the Wildcats fell 24-17 to FCS Cal Poly. They fell to No. 1 Ferris State the following week with a final score of 28-14.

In Week 3, Central Washington seemingly found their groove. The first win of the Scott Powers era came in a 45-36 comeback win vs. No. 10 Western Oregon. Arguably, the biggest play of the day came with just 1:32 left in the game - Ryder Bumgarner tiptoed two yards into the end zone to end the 8-play, 71-yard drive and ultimately win the game for the Wildcats. Justin Brennan was the day’s leader, going 19-for-26 for 314 yards and four touchdowns.

Mars Hill = Good

Undefeated overall, undefeated in the SAC, big upset on the road. I don’t know about you, but that’s what I would call “good.”

Unranked Mars Hill went on the road to face conference opponent Lenoir-Rhyne, taking the Bears down for the first time since 2017 (43-28). Defense shined and got out to a hot start, beginning with an L-R interception, thanks to Caden Hilemon, in the first quarter. They held the Bears scoreless until the fourth quarter, held them to just 16 rushing yards and recorded a program-record seven sacks (tied, 2017 vs. UNC Pembroke).

Offensively, the Lions were the first to put points on the board, thanks to a 23-yard field goal from Matthis Newsome in the second quarter. They would go on to score 9 more points in the first half, and then another three in Q3.
