The Small School Storyline of Week 2 in Division 2 football was upsets and big wins across the board. Unranked teams took down top-15’s, unsuspecting schools stayed perfect and teams without votes to their name rally for a spot in the FloCollege Top 25.

Here were this weekend’s biggest wins and upsets in D2:
Davenport Panthers On The Prowl
If Davenport hasn’t entered your rankings conversations yet, this weekend should have changed that.
The unranked Panthers entered the weekend with 2 wins, eager to take on No. 15 Indianapolis at home. In a 19-12 decision, Davenport notched their highest-ranked D2 win in program history. They finished with 465 offensive yards, 300 of which were rushing, and 34:08 of possession. Its defense held the Greyhounds to 252 total yards. The kicker? UIndy was held to just 10 yards of offense in the first half.
The Panthers begin conference play on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 1 p.m. as they face GLIAC foe Northern Michigan in Wildcats territory (Marquette, Mich.).

Rank Lenoir-Rhyne.
If I were solely in charge of the D2 rankings, Lenoir-Rhyne would be present. But I’m not, so LR will have to keep proving why they deserve to be there. Good news: they did just that this past weekend.
Lenoir-Rhyne bounced back from last week’s 34-23 loss to West Alabama to take down No. 11 Newberry 21-14 in pouring rain. The two were scoreless at halftime; Newberry was the first to score with 10:31 left in the third quarter, but Lenoir-Rhyne wouldn’t give up that easily. They answered with 21 consecutive points beginning in the third quarter and only allowed the Wolves to score once in Q4.
Bears quarterback Wells Bettenhausen shined behind the line, going 10-for-17 for 131 yards and a touchdown.

Roosevelt Is Perfect - Who Would Have Guessed?
After going 2-8 last season (and 1-9 in 2024), Roosevelt Football was the opposite of a preseason favorite. They were picked to finish second-to-last in the GLIAC Preseason Football Coaches Poll, just ahead of Wayne State (Mich.), who went 0-11 in 2025. The Lakers are in their third season of NCAA D2 membership after transitioning from the NAIA in 2024-25.
So, it may come as a surprise to many that Roosevelt is perfect three games into the 2026 season. Through those three games, Roosevelt has outscored their opponents 144-112.
In week 2 of action, Roosevelt scored a school-record 59 points against Southwest Baptist in Missouri, winning the shootout 59-56. The Lakers ran for a school-record 292 yards while facing the Bearcats, led by sophomore RB Steven Moore.
