Lenoir-Rhyne made quite a statement to open the season when they hosted Virginia Union at Helen & Leonard Moretz Stadium in Hickory, N.C.

The Bears looked like they were running downhill most of the game, scoring at will, and dropping 31 points on the No. 10 Panthers before halftime. LR quarterback Wells Bettenhausen looked sharp in his first start, going 16-24 for 226 yards and a touchdown. 

Running back LJ Turner added two rushing touchdowns. 

VUU came in with high expectations, as the CIAA preseason favorite, but were only able to muster a single field goal in the game, adding it late in the fourth quarter. 

The LR defense came up big, too, sacking Virginia Unions quarterbacks three times, with 11 tackles for loss.

    FINAL - Virginia Union 3, Lenoir-Rhyne 45

    Lenoir-Rhyne dominated from front to back against No. 10 Virginia Union as they secured a home opener victory. The Bears went into the locker room up 31-0, and added another two touchdowns in the second half. 

    Virginia Union, who came to Hickory Creek ranked highly in nearly every D2 football poll, mustered only three points, breaking the shutout with a late field goal. The VUU offense never really got started, and across two quarterbacks accumulated only 157 passing yards. 

    Lenoir-Rhyne will welcome GSC foe West Alabama to Hickory Creek next weekend.

    Shermon Davis rushed to the left for a 70-yard run, to put Lenoir-Rhyne within striking distance once again. 

    Davis was finally brought down after running across most of the field untouched.

    Virginia Union finally put together a great drive, and nearly scored before being stuffed on four consecutive plays before a turnover on downs.

    Blanc Passes For Touchdown

    Max Blanc relieved Bettenhausen at quarterback after the latter was dealing with cramping. Blanc immediately led the Bears to another touchdown, using an RPO to toss a one-yard score to Carson Spoonts. 

    Lenoir-Rhyne is up to 38 points, and have yet to give up a point in this game.

    Lenoir-Rhyne Dominates First Half

    The Bears dropped 31 points on No. 10 Virginia Union in the first half. LR seemed to score at will, and when VUU would string together a couple of plays, the Bears defense would step up for a sack or a forced punt. 

    Virginia Union quarterback RJ Rosales was sacked three times and completed only one pass, going 1-5 for 15 yards. 

    Wells Bettenhausen, who started at quarterback for Lenoir-Rhyne, put together a great half, going 16-24 for 226 yards.
