Springboks Lead All Blacks Despite New Zealand Attacking Advantage

South Africa leads New Zealand 13-12 at halftime despite the All Blacks producing more attacking volume. New Zealand has 90 passes, 58 carries and four line breaks compared with South Africa’s 51 passes, 42 carries and two breaks. The Springboks, however, have generated 132 post-contact meters to New Zealand’s 101.

Discipline has been a major difference. New Zealand conceded nine penalties to South Africa’s four, helping the Springboks spend 28 minutes in front compared with eight for the All Blacks.

Jasper Wiese leads all players with 10 carries, while Paul de Villiers has completed a match-high 12 tackles. Jordie Barrett has been disruptive for New Zealand with four turnovers won.

The All Blacks have scored two tries to South Africa’s one, but the Springboks have kicked two penalty goals. New Zealand also finished the half strongly, holding 67% of possession over the final 10 minutes, but failed to score during that stretch.

Rassie Erasmus' Springboks Scrum Strategy

Rassie Erasmus’ Springboks scrum strategy is built around treating the scrum as an attacking weapon, not simply a way to restart play.

The basic approach is to build such a powerful front row and tight five that South Africa can repeatedly force penalties, gain territory and create scoring opportunities. A few features define the strategy:

• Maximum pressure rather than simply securing possession. When the Springboks sense an advantage, they often keep the ball at No. 8 and continue driving instead of immediately playing away. The goal is to force the referee into awarding a penalty.
• The Bomb Squad. Erasmus has frequently loaded his bench with forwards, sometimes using a 6-2 or 7-1 forwards-backs split. South Africa can replace much of its pack simultaneously and attack a tiring opposition scrum with international-quality replacements.
• Scrum for penalties, then repeat. If South Africa wins a scrum penalty, it can kick downfield, attack through the lineout and maul, or take points. When another scrum becomes available, the Springboks are comfortable going back to the same source of pressure.
• Fresh front-row combinations. Erasmus has built unusual depth at prop and hooker. Instead of replacements merely surviving the final 20-30 minutes, they're expected to increase the physical pressure.
• Psychological pressure. Once an opposing front row has conceded several penalties, every subsequent scrum becomes a potential problem. That can influence how the opposition plays and how the referee interprets the contest.

One of the more aggressive manifestations is the intentional knock-on tactic South Africa has occasionally used when playing under advantage: if the Springboks believe their scrum is overwhelmingly dominant, deliberately ending the phase can allow them to return to the infringement and choose the scrum. It essentially turns an opposition penalty into another opportunity to attack through the set piece.

So for today's Springboks-All Blacks match, the key thing to watch is what South Africa does when it establishes scrum dominance. Erasmus doesn't necessarily want clean, quick ball. Sometimes the slow, ugly scrum that ends with Matthew Carley's arm going toward South Africa is exactly the outcome the Springboks want.
