London is spoiled for sport this July. Wimbledon just ended. The World Cup has gripped the world, with England taking the pitch for third on Saturday after a close semi-final loss. And in the middle of it all, the Wanda Diamond League returns to London Stadium, with world records on the table and current world record holders on the start line and in the field.
Keely Hodgkinson has been vocal about targeting Jarmila Kratochvilova's 1:53.28 800m world record, a mark set in Munich in 1983 that has been untouched for forty-three years. Josh Kerr will take aim at Hicham El Guerrouj's 3:43.13 in the mile, the Rome mark from 1999 that he and his team have called 'Project 222'. Both attempts will happen on home soil.

Add Julien Alfred, fresh off a 21.51 in Monaco that moved her to third on the all-time world 200m list, Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the high jump, Valarie Sion in the discus circle, Mondo Duplantis on the pole vault runway and Ja'Kobe Tharp in the 110m hurdles - Saturday has a headline for every event.
The top storylines are more than promising.
Mile World Record in Sight, Josh Kerr Looks to Call the Clock at 3:42
Josh Kerr has named the plan. He wants 3:42. Faster than the mile world record and inside one of the major barriers the men's mile has left.
Kerr's personal best in the event is the 3:45.34 from the Pre Classic a couple of summers ago. What sits around him on the start line is a handful of other record holders and a supporting cast built for the pace.
Yared Nuguse arrives as the primary challenger - the American record holder with a personal best of 3:43.97. Hobbs Kessler holds the indoor 2km world record. Ethan Strand sits fifth on the American all-time list. Germany's Robert Farken owns his country's 1500m and mile records. Simeon Birnbaum has the NCAA 1500m record. Mohamed Abdilaahi, Sam Prakel, Nathan Green, Arlo Ludewick and Jake Hayward complete the field.
Brooks has crafted a one-off spike for the attempt. Weather forecast: 74 degrees, 54% humidity, winds under seven miles per hour. The race kicks off at 3:36 PM local time and at 10:36 AM ET.
If Kerr hits the target, the oldest men's middle-distance world record left on the books falls. If he misses, sub-3:44 is still the expected outcome from a field this deep. Either way, London is watching for a number.
Hodgkinson Continues her 800m World Record Hunt on Home Soil
Keely Hodgkinson has been planning on changing the longest-standing world record in track and field for a while, and Saturday provides another opportunity for that. The Olympic 800m champion has set a lot of markers on the road to this. Her Paris 2024 gold at 1:56.72. Her indoor world record of 1:54.87 in Liévin in February. Her British outdoor record of 1:54.33 at the Stockholm Diamond League. That has all been preparation and London has always been where she plans to hit the peak.
Georgia Hunter-Bell has sadly had to pull out, but Hodgkinson will still be joined by the likes of Femke Broeders-Bol, Jemma Reekie, Addison Wiley and Tsige Dugma. Broeders-Bol, who opened her indoor season in 1:59 (in her debut running of the event), has now brought that time all the way down to 1:55.60 outdoors - 0.06 seconds off Ellen van Langen's Dutch record set in 1992.
Audrey Werro, the current world leader (1:53.80), is not in the lineup but has shown that 43 years of dust could be blown away soon.
Alfred and Thomas, the Olympic Champions, Line Up Together Again Over 200m
Julien Alfred and Gabby Thomas met over 200m in Monaco last week. Alfred won in a new personal best of 21.51 seconds that moved her to third on the all-time world list, behind only Florence Griffith Joyner's 21.34 and Shericka Jackson's 21.41. Thomas took third. London gives them the rematch.
Thomas holds a 21.60 that sits second on the all-time American list. Dina Asher-Smith will join them and bring the home-country appearance at 21.88, and the British contingent grows deeper from there: Success Eduan just beat Amy Hunt at the UK national championships in 22.43, and Hunt - the 2025 World silver medalist - is on the London start line too.
Shaunae Miller-Uibo joins the field, alongside American entries Anavia Battle and Cambrea Sturgis.
Mahuchikh Meets Olyslagers Over the High Jump Bar
Yaroslava Mahuchikh has held the women's high jump world record at 2.10m since the Paris Diamond League in July 2024. That mark broke Stefka Kostadinova's 2.09m from 1987. Mahuchikh followed it with Olympic gold in Paris.
Nicola Olyslagers has been one of the athletes keeping the top of the event honest through Mahuchikh's run. The Australian owns a 2.04m lifetime best and has been on the podium at every global championship since Tokyo 2020.
Iryna Gerashchenko, Morgan Lake, Eleanor Patterson and Maria Żodzik are also in London and are part of the elusive 2 meters club.
On Saturday, the bar goes where the athletes take it.
Tharp Gets the Chance to Respond in the 110m Hurdles
A few weeks ago at the Prefontaine Classic, Jamal Britt ran 12.86 to win the men's 110m hurdles in a meeting record. Ja'Kobe Tharp - the world record holder at 12.75 - followed in 12.91. London gives him the response.
The 20-year-old Auburn hurdler has been the fastest man in the world in the discipline for six weeks now and he arrives at the stadium in Stratford with a field around him designed for the answer.
Trey Cunningham broke 13-seconds for the first time in his career earlier this season. Cordell Tinch owns a lifetime best of 12.87 seconds. A field this deep does not allow anyone to cruise.
Also Worth Watching
Oblique Seville returns to the men's 100m after his win over Jordan Anthony in Monaco,
who will also be in the field. Kayinsola Ajayi lines up alongside them, fresh off equalling his Nigerian national record.
Marileidy Paulino races the women's 400m, after yet another win on the circuit. Norway's Henriette Jaeger will challenge. On the men's side Jacory Patterson, Jereem Richards and Matthew Hudson-Smith headline, with the whole start list owning personal bests under 44.70.
Karsten Warholm takes on the men's 400m hurdles. The Norwegian holds the world record at 45.94.
Valarie Sion enters as the top-ranked women's discus thrower in the world at 73.52m and the most dominant in the discipline.
Mondo Duplantis is back on the runway and is still in search of his first world record as a married man. 6.32m is the mark to look for.
London Stadium has always known what the crowd can do to an afternoon of racing. On Saturday, a very British sporting summer is looking for one more headline.
