All eyes will be on Faith Kipyegon when the multiple-time Olympic and World champion lines up for the women's 3000m at the Monaco Diamond League.

Last weekend at the Prefontaine Classic, fans saw something rare: Kipyegon lose. She finished behind American Nikki Hiltz and fellow Kenyan Dorcus Ewoi in the mile before it was later revealed that she had been racing while managing a hamstring injury.

That raises one of the biggest storylines heading into Monaco: how will Kipyegon respond?

Typically, Kipyegon enters races coming off another dominant victory or even a record-breaking performance. This time, Monaco represents another opportunity to build fitness and test herself against a world-class field as she works her way back to full strength.

She'll face a stacked lineup that includes Aleshign Baweke, Agnes Jebet Ngetich, and Australia's Jess Hull, among others.

Whenever Kipyegon races, expectations are sky-high, and more often than not, she delivers. Widely regarded as the greatest women's middle-distance runner of all time, she owns the world records in both the 1500m (3:48.68) and the mile (4:07.64). During her Breaking4 exhibition, she became the fastest woman ever over the mile with a time of 4:06.91, though the performance was aided by pacers and technology and was not eligible for record purposes. She is also the former 5000m world record holder after running 14:05.20 in Paris in 2023.

Although her legacy has been built in the 1500m and mile, Kipyegon has repeatedly shown remarkable range. The 3000m sits in the middle of that spectrum, combining the speed that has made her dominant with the endurance she'll need as she continues to explore longer distances. Her personal best of 8:07.04 suggests there's still plenty of room to make history in the event, especially after expressing her desire to eventually transition to the marathon later in her career.

Monaco should provide another measuring stick in that journey. With another race under her belt, a legendary venue, and a field packed with elite East African talent, Kipyegon will be looking to continue progressing after her injury. Jess Hull could be one of the athletes capable of disrupting the East African dominance and adding another intriguing layer to what should be one of the meet's best races.
