The spotlight was on Hayward Field this weekend, as the world’s best gathered for the iconic Prefontaine Classic to put on a show for the 4th of July. Fireworks were not the only spectacle of the weekend, as athletes lit up the track and field with multiple meeting and national records.
Here are the top 5 performances from this weekend.
5. Yared Nuguse, Ethan Strand Display American Mile Depth
Americans Yared Nuguse and Ethan Strand had themselves a day in the Bowerman Mile. Nuguse, who was vying for his first Bowerman title after a series of second and third places, challenged the front of the pack throughout the race. Despite a strong kick, he fell just short of the title, clocking a 3:46.61 for second place.
Strand was in tenth place at the bell lap, staying patient before strategically making his way toward the front. By the homestretch, it was all gas and no brakes as he had an incredible kick to launch himself into third place. Strand’s time of 3:46.97 was nearly a two second personal best and makes him the third fastest U.S. man All-Time in the outdoor mile. Yared Nuguse remains at the top of the U.S. All-Time lists, holding a personal best of 3:43.97. He now has the four fastest outdoor mile times in US History.
Hobbs Kessler added a fourth place finish for the American contingent in 3:47.38, making him the fourth American All-Time in the Outdoor Mile.
4. Jamal Britt Storms to a World #5 All-Time 110mH Mark
Jamal Britt’s breakout season continued in Eugene, where the American hurdler ran his fourth sub 13 performance of the season. Britt defeated world record holder Ja’Kobe Tharp, lowering his personal best from 12.89 to 12.86 in the Men’s 110mH.
His performance ranks as world #5 All-Time and is currently world #2 behind Tharp. Britt’s time also set a new meeting record, beating David Oliver’s previous record of 12.90 set in 2010.
3. Nikki Hiltz Runs Fastest Mile on American Soil
The last time the Women’s Mile was contested at the Pre Classic was 1993, and its return certainly delivered. The field was stacked, featuring the 1500m podium medalists from both the 2024 Paris Olympics and 2025 World Championships.
What turned into a tactical race produced an exhilarating final 100 meters. Nikki Hiltz bided their time before making a strong surge to outkick Dorcus Ewoi and Faith Kipyegon for the crown. Hiltz’ time of 4:17.49 is a new U.S./North American Soil Mile Record and Pre Classic meeting record.
2. Cam Myers Breaks Oceania Mile Area Record
No American has won the Bowerman Mile since 2006, so hopes were high that the drought would finally end on Independence Day…but Australian Cam Myers had other plans.
Just six days after setting the Oceania 1500m Area Record in Paris, Myers won the historic Bowerman Mile, yet again in record fashion. His time of 3:46.06 is a new National and Area Record, beating Oliver Hoare’s 2022 record of 3:47.48. Myers’ victory cements his name in history as the first Australian to win the event.
1. Tate Taylor Sets U.S. HS 200m Record
Reigning Olympic Champion Letsile Tebogo may have been the favorite in the Men’s 200m, but that didn’t phase high school star Tate Taylor from making a statement. Coming into the field with a personal best of 19.94, Taylor stunned the field with a commanding win over Tebogo and the rest of the professional field, running a blazing 19.75.
The 18-year-old’s exceptional time was made even more impressive by the -0.9 headwind he ran into. Taylor’s sub-20 performance lowered his own U.S. HS Record and currently ranks #5 in the world this year. He now also owns four of the top ten fastest 200m times ever run by a U.S. high schooler. The future is bright for this young star, who is committed to compete for the Texas Tech Red Raiders this upcoming year.
