2026 Prefontaine Classic: Cam Myers, Cole Hocker Set To Clash In Historic Bowerman Mile

A year ago, Dutch phenom Niels Laros stunned the crowd at Hayward Field, chasing down Olympic bronze medalist Yared Nuguse (USA) over the final 50m and edging the American at the line, 3:45.94 to 3:45.95.

On a day that saw 13 men dip under 3:50, Laros' lifetime best was enough to claim a coveted Diamond League win and lower his own Dutch national record by three seconds.

Looking ahead to Saturday's clash, there is no shortage of men toeing the line capable of breaking the tape in the 2026 Bowerman Mile.

In spite of the field's historic depth, it's hard not to shift most of the attention toward Cam Myers, the 20-year-old Aussie who isn't even a week removed from running 3:28 over 1500m.

At last Sunday's Diamond League meeting in Paris, Myers launched himself into the all-time lists, becoming the 12th-fastest man in world history and the new Australian and Oceanic record holder.

Even in the midst of a hot streak, the youngster will have his work cut out for him, with a few heavyweights standing in his way.

The American contingent alone makes this field dangerous. Cole Hocker, Yared Nuguse, Hobbs Kessler, Colin Sahlman, Ethan Strand, Gary Martin, and Vincent Ciattei all bring serious credentials, but it's Hocker, the defending Olympic champion, who headlines the group after already clocking 3:45 at the Sound Invite in February.

Last year's runner-up, Nuguse, ran 3:48.21 in the Oslo Dream Mile last month, nipped at the line by a familiar face he'll see again this weekend in Timothy Cheruiyot.

Fellow American Hobbs Kessler has put together a strong 2026 campaign of his own, highlighted by a North American and national record of 4:48.79 in the 2000m back in January.

The international contingent runs just as deep, headlined by defending champion Niels Laros along with Reynold Cheruiyot (KEN), Azeddine Habz (FRA), and Robert Farken (GER). All told, it's a 14-man field capable of taking aim at Hicham El Guerrouj's (MAR) 27-year-old world record of 3:43.13.
