Paris was one of the most anticipated stops on the Diamond League circuit, and it certainly lived up to the hype. Countless world leads were set, and multiple record books were rewritten on the track and the field. While Paris stole the spotlight, history was also made on the trails at the Western States 100 Miler.
Here are the top five stories from the weekend.
5. Marco Arop Runs 800m World Lead
Paris continues to bring out the best in Marco Arop. The Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalist dominated the field and cruised to a solo 1:41.84 world lead. Finishing over 2 seconds ahead of the rest of the field, Arop reminded everyone that he’s one of the world’s best 800m runners.
Arop is currently the only man to have run sub-1:42 this season. Cooper Lutkenhaus and Emmanuel Wanyoni have run 1:42.08 and 1.42.09, respectively. The next matchup between the three will certainly be a must-watch.
4. World Lead and Diamond League 400m record for Marileidy Paulino
Marileidy Paulino keeps doing Marileidy Paulino things, winning her third straight 400m race this season. Her time of 48.48 surpassed Dejeana Oakley’s previous world lead set at the NCAA Championships. Paulino’s performance also marked a new Paris meeting record and overall Diamond League 400m Record.
Can anyone stop Paulino this season, or will she continue to dominate the women’s 400m? Only time will tell.
3. Vincent Bouillard Breaks Western States Course Record
While Paris was the star of the show this weekend, we have to turn our attention to the Western States 100 Miler. Vincent Bouillard shattered the course record, clocking a blazing 13:46.15. His time broke the previous course record by an astonishing 23 minutes and made him the first Frenchman to ever win the race.
Bouillard made his pass in the final 20 miles and led four men under the previous course record, with Francesco Puppi just five minutes back.
On the women’s side, Jennifer Lichter also rewrote the history books. In her first 100-mile race, Lichter won in 15:28.05, breaking the course record and finishing 11th overall.
2. Cameron Myers Shatters 1500m National Record
A heat warning did not stop Cameron Myers from lighting the track on fire in the men’s 1500m. With 500 meters to go, the 20-year-old made his move and never looked back.
The race was all Myers as he stormed to a brilliant victory of 3:28.00, setting a world lead and an Australian national record. This may be his first Diamond League meeting victory, but it certainly will not be his last.
1. Audrey Werro Continues Her Historic Season
Audrey Werro continues to prove that she is in a league of her own. The Swiss star dominated the women’s 800m in Paris, crossing the line in 1:53.80, just 0.57 seconds shy of Jarmila Kratochvílová's world record set in 1983. Not only did Werro improve her World Lead and #3 All-Time mark, but she also set a plethora of records, including a Swiss national record, Paris meeting record, and overall Diamond League record.
An honorable mention goes to Femke Bol, who made a statement about why she is a serious contender in the event. Bol ran a nearly 2-second personal best of 1:55.60, moving her up to World #3 this season.
