Track and field was on full display this weekend, with several national championship meets being held at the high school and professional levels. Freshmen stole the spotlight with multiple national records, while we saw the pros deliver world-class performances, including a world lead in the men’s 100m and a breakout performance in the women’s triple jump.
Here are the top five stories from the weekend.
5. Mya Arrendell 50.85 anchor leg to lead Bullis to a U.S. #5 All-Time 4x400m
Freshman phenom Mya Arrendell put on a show at Franklin Field this weekend. On Friday, she equaled her personal best of 11.27 (+0.8) to take second in the Championship Girls’ 100m. The next day, she set another personal best, this time in the Freshman 400m where she won the event in 52.88.
She continued to display her dominance on Sunday with a killer anchor leg in the 4x400m. Receiving the baton in second place, Arrendell split a 50.85 to reclaim the lead and win the title for Bullis. Bullis’ final time of 3:34.12 is U.S #5 All-Time.
4. Sha’Carri Richardson runs World #2 in the 100m
Home turf advantage was in full effect for Sha’Carri Richardson, as she ran a 100m World #2 time of 10.77 (+0.3) at the Star Athletics Sprint Series. This performance was Richardson’s fastest time since 2022, signaling that the Olympic Champion is back in top form.
Richardson was notably the only athlete in the heat to break 11 seconds, with Shaunae Miller-Uibo coming in at 11.05. How fast will Richardson run when she’s being challenged? We will find out soon, as she is set to compete against Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Sherika Jackson in the 100m at the Prefontaine Classic.
3. Melanie Doggett ties the High School 200m Freshman record
The youngsters are proving they can compete with the big dogs, as Melanie Doggett runs a dominant 22.48 (+1.9) 200m at Nike Outdoor Nationals to tie Tamara Davis’ 2018 high school freshman record.
This performance came one day after Doggett claimed the 100m Championship national title in 11.18 (+2.0), U.S. #3 this season. The future is bright for Doggett, and we cannot wait to see her continue to rewrite history.
2. Oblique Seville runs World Lead in the 100m
Jamaica is back on top of the world standings in the Men’s 100m. Oblique Seville ran a world lead of 9.82 (+0.6) in front of a home crowd at the Jamaican Championships. His win in Kingston marks his first national title.
The mark is 0.05 seconds shy of Seville's best of 9.77, so he likely will be eyeing a new personal best as his season progresses. We will see him return to the Wanda Diamond League on July 18 in London, where he is the reigning 100m champion.
1. Davisleydi Velazco becomes Second Woman in 10 Years to Jump over 15.12m
Things are heating up in the women’s triple jump. At the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Doha, Davisleydi Velazco cleared the 15-meter mark for the first time in her career. Not only was her 15.13m jump a massive 28-centimeter personal best, but Velazaco’s jump makes her only the second woman since 2016 to jump over 15.12m.
Yulimar Rojas is the other woman who has cleared 15.12m in the last decade. Rojas holds the world record of 15.74m, but she is currently sitting at world #7 with a season’s best of 14.95m.
