The 2026 edition of Final X will take place in Newark, New Jersey, on June 19, with the country's best wrestlers taking the stage and competing for places on Team USA for the 2026 World Championships.

With Final X approaching, it's a good time to revisit how the event works and what is at stake for the athletes.

What Is Final X?

Final X is a freestyle wrestling event that determines who will represent the Team USA in each wrestling weight class. With World Team spots on the line, Final X is widely regarded as one of the most important events on the domestic wrestling calendar.

In each weight class, the winner earns a spot on the U.S. Senior World Team and the opportunity to compete on the world stage.

Unlike traditional tournaments that feature full brackets, Final X is built around head-to-head matchups. Those matchups consists of a best-of-three series, with the first wrestler to win two matches securing a place on Team USA.

How Wrestlers Qualify For Final X

The road to Final X consists of three stages: U.S. Open, the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament and Final X.

The qualification process begins at the U.S. Open, where wrestlers compete for national titles and positioning int he World Team selection process.

If there aren't any returning world medalists at a particular weight class, the U.S. Open champion advances directly to Final X. If there is a returning world medalist at that weight, the Open champion instead receives a bye into the finals of the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

The next step is the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Wrestlers compete through a bracket hoping to earn a spot to wrestle at Final X. The winner of the Challenge Tournament becomes the second Final X participant at that weight class.

At weights with a returning world medalist, the Challenge Tournament winner advances to Final X to face the medalist. At weights without a returning medalist, the Challenge Tournament winner advances to face the U.S. Open champion.

Lastly, Final X serves as the final stage of the process and determines who will be apart of the U.S. Team at the 2026 World Championships.

As mentioned earlier, two qualified wrestlers will compete in a best-of-three series, where it takes two wins to claim series victory and a spot with the World Team. If a wrestler wins the first two matches, the series ends immediately. If the wrestlers split the first two bouts, a third and deciding match is contested later in the day.

Event Formats

Regular Final X events feature a full card of matchups across multiple weight classes and proceed as scheduled.

Whether contested during a full Final X card or throguh a standalone wrestle-off, the objective remains the same: determine who will represent the United States at the World Championships.
