Shenese Walker delivered the shock of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, June 13, defeating collegiate-record holder Adaejah Hodge to win the women's 100-meter national title at Hayward Field.

Walker, a Florida State senior, crossed the finish line in 10.88 to secure the biggest victory of her collegiate career. The performance came just two days after Hodge stunned the track and field world by running a collegiate-record 10.63 in the prelims, breaking Sha'Carri Richardson's long-standing NCAA mark and entering the final as the overwhelming favorite.

But championships are won in the final, and Walker rose to the occasion. She held off a late charge from Hodge, who finished second in 10.93, and denied the Georgia freshman a sweep of the NCAA record and national title. Walker's victory capped a steady rise through the collegiate ranks and gave Florida State one of the signature moments of the championship meet.
LSU's Shawnti Jackson claimed third in 11.01, while Ole Miss senior Alicia Burnett finished fourth in 11.05. Tennessee freshman Dana Wilson placed fifth in 11.09, followed by Florida's Gabrielle Matthews, LSU's Tima Godbless and USC's Brianna Selby.
Hodge leaves Eugene as the NCAA record holder and one of the brightest young stars in the sport. On this night, however, Walker was the fastest woman on the track, and that made her the NCAA champion.
