Jane vs. Doris: Part III
Few rivalries in track and field are as exciting right now as the battle between Jane Hedengren and Doris Lemngole.
Their first chapter came during cross country season when Alabama's Lemngole captured the NCAA title after holding off a challenge from the talented freshman Hedengren. They met again during the indoor season at the Millrose Games, where Lemngole won the 3,000m in collegiate-record fashion. The third meeting came at the NCAA Indoor Championships, where Hedengren flipped the script and avenged her cross country loss by winning the 5,000m title.
Now comes the outdoor finale.
Lemngole enters as the reigning NCAA steeplechase champion, collegiate-record holder, and World Championships finalist in the event. However, she has elected to forgo the steeplechase and focus solely on the 5,000m. The question now becomes: can Lemngole avenge her indoor championship defeat, or will Hedengren continue her remarkable freshman campaign?
Will Ja'Kobe Tharp Break Another Grant Holloway Record?
The question may not be whether Ja'Kobe Tharp wins the 110m hurdles title—it's whether he can pair that victory with another collegiate record.
Earlier this year, Tharp ran 7.32 in the 60m hurdles to break Grant Holloway's seemingly untouchable collegiate record of 7.35, finishing just 0.05 seconds shy of the world record. Holloway's outdoor collegiate record of 12.98 in the 110m hurdles still stands, but it may be under serious threat by the end of the weekend.
Can Adaejah Hodge Pull Off The Sprint Double?
Few athletes have generated more buzz this season than Adaejah Hodge.
The British Virgin Islands Olympian and Georgia freshman has been sensational, entering both the 100m and 200m as one of the favorites. Hodge has run 10.77 in the 100m and 21.92 in the 200m this season, making her the second-fastest collegian in history in the 100m and the fourth-fastest in collegiate history in the 200m.
The sprint double, however, will be anything but easy.
Florida's Shenese Walker, the reigning NCAA indoor 60m champion, and JaMeesia Ford, the defending NCAA outdoor 200m champion, are both capable of challenging Hodge and ensuring that neither race comes easily.
Auburn's Sprint Squad Could Power A Team Title Run
Auburn's sprint corps alone could put the Tigers in position to contend for a national championship.
Five of the 12 men's 100m qualifiers from the NCAA East Regional represent Auburn, led by Kanyinsola Ajayi. The Nigerian star is the African record holder, Nigerian record holder, and a 2025 World Championships finalist in the 100m. He also enters the meet as the world leader with a blazing 9.84.
With that level of firepower, Auburn's sprinters could play a massive role in the team title race.
Star Power In The Men's 5,000m
The men's 5,000m may be one of the deepest and most intriguing races of the weekend.
Habtom Samuel is looking to cap off a stellar 2025-26 campaign by adding NCAA titles in both the 5,000m and 10,000m. Marco Langon continues his pursuit of a first NCAA championship to add to Villanova's storied distance-running tradition. Simeon Birnbaum will have the advantage of competing on his home track and is eager to make a statement in front of a home crowd.
Denis Kipngetich enters as the No. 2-ranked athlete in the field, while fearless freshman Tayvon Kitchen has shown throughout the season that he is not afraid to race aggressively against the nation's best.
Many expect the race to be tactical and come down to the final lap. However, with Samuel already owning the collegiate record, there's always the possibility that the pace gets pushed and history is made once again.
Get Ready For Fireworks
As if these storylines weren't enough, countless other athletes and events have the potential to produce unforgettable moments.
Whether it's championship rivalries, collegiate-record attempts, world-leading performances, or breakthrough stars, the NCAA Championships promise to deliver excitement from start to finish. Buckle up—it's shaping up to be an unforgettable week of collegiate track and field.
