South Africa Rugby Captain Siya Kolisi Adds A Try0:17

For those unfamiliar with the South Africa Rugby team, they are called the Springboks and they are a one of the best rugby national teams in the world.

And the reigning back-to-back Rugby World Cup winners.

The national team, has been fueled by talents such as Danie Gerber to the Springboks current captain, Siya Kolisi. The last two Rugby World Cup teams have been led by Kolisi and a golden age of talent. Cheslin Kolbe, Eben Etzebeth, Faf de Klerk and World Rugby Player of the Years like Malcolm Marx and Pieter-Steph Du Toit.

The No. 1-ranked team in the world is looking to add another championship to its result as the first Nations Championship begins on July 4. With the start of that tournament, lets recognize some of South Africa’s iconic players to have worn and represented the nation.

We put together a list of the five best players to have put on the Springboks uniform.

Danie Gerber

Lastly is Danie Gerber. For the Springboks, he primarily played as a centre. He was inducted into the Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007 and South African Hall of Fame in 2019. He won South African Player of the Year in 1984. Gerber scored 19 tries in 24 internationals during his time as a Springbok.

Joost van der Westhuizen

Joost van der Westhuizen is another former Springbok, who played as a scrum-half while capping a total of 89 times, scoring 38 tries during his 10 years with the Springboks. He represented South Africa in three Rugby World Cups, in which he was a part of the 1996 team that won the tournament. He was also part of the Springboks team that won the nation its first Tri-Nations title in 1998. Van der Westhuizen was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007.

Victor Matfield

Victor Matfield is a former Springbok, considered widely as one of the best locks to have ever played for the nation. He holds the record for 2nd-most capped Springbok in history with 127 test caps. He has represented the Springboks in three Rugby World Cups, and helped lead the team to the trophy in 2007 while being named Man of the Match in the final against England.

Bryan Habana

Bryan Habana is a former winger for the Springboks, having 124 caps for the national team under his belt. He is well known for his electric pace, which fun fact, he raced a cheetah in 2007 in order to raise awareness for wildlife conservation. He won the International Rugby Board (IRB) Player of the Year award in 2007. Pretty cool he was named after Manchester United legends Bryan Robson and Gary Bailey.

Siya Kolisi

Siya Kolisi is the current captain of the Springboks, as he plays the position of flanker. He led the Springboks to victory in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final against England and again in 2023 against the New Zealand All Blacks. He is the second captain in history to achieve such an accomplishment.
