Conference championship season officially arrived, and with it comes rivalries, title chases, and massive NCAA implications.

From Oregon’s pursuit of a historic sweep to heavyweight middle-distance battles in the Big Ten and SEC, this weekend’s meets are set to shape the rest of the outdoor season.

Here are the top three storylines to watch.

Oregon Men and Women Chase the Triple Crown

It may be the Year of the Horse, but 2026 has belonged to the Oregon Ducks.

The Ducks opened the academic year by sweeping the Big Ten Cross Country Championships, with both the men’s and women’s teams dominating the competition. Oregon claimed both individual titles and overwhelmed the team standings with the women's six Ducks finishing the top ten and scoring 18 points against Penn State's 78, while the men scored 38 points to Michigan State's 68.

And the dominance didn’t stop once the calendar turned to indoor season.

At the 2026 Big Ten Indoor Championships, Oregon once again swept the team titles.

On the men’s side, Simeon Birnbaum led the charge, winning both the 3000m and 5000m, while Aiden Carter added another individual title in the heptathlon. Oregon scored 114 points, holding off Penn State’s 94 despite winning only three individual events.

The Ducks piled up points in the distance events, while Penn State countered with sprint and middle-distance strength, including a dominant 1-2-3 finish in the 800m.

On the women's side, the Ducks were solid across all fronts. They put up four individual title winners, where they scored 70 points alone across the 1500m, 3000m, and 5000m, going two for three in sweeping finishes.

Add in Aaliyah McCormick’s 60m hurdles title, and Oregon proved they were more than just a distance powerhouse.

A team almost based solely on their deep distance talent. But will it be enough to earn the outdoor title?

Birnbaum vs. McFarland: Big Ten Bragging Rights

The Big Ten’s biggest showdown may come in the 1500m.

Oregon’s Simeon Birnbaum entered the championship season as the NCAA record holder after running 3:31.69, the fastest collegiate 1500m ever.

Michigan’s Trent McFarland once held the No. 2 spot nationally before being pushed down the all-time list by Marco Langon and Brian Masai. But rankings won’t matter this weekend.

It comes down to winners and losers. Every place, every point, that will help their team move up on the podium.

The rivalry already carries weight after Michigan’s victory over Penn State in the Penn Relays 4x800m, where McFarland helped solidify the Wolverines’ growing reputation as “800mU.”

Currently, five of the top ten times in the 1500m are held by Oregon, but the battle will come down to Birnbaum and McFarland.

In addition to his collegiate record 1500m, he also owns the NCAA lead in the 800m (1:44.67) and enters the weekend seeded first in the 5000m.

With the 1500m on lock, what event will Birnbaum choose next? And if it's the likely 5000m, but McFarland be able to stand his ground as leader of 800mU?

Ogaze vs. Simms: 400m

The SEC brings us down south for the sprint drama, with another matchup of the NCAA No. 1 and No. 2.

Jonathan Simms of Georgia and Samuel Ogazi of Alabama not only sit at the 2026 season No. 1 and No. 2, but also at the NCAA all-time No. 6 and 7.

After running the 400m Torrin Lawrence Memorial Meet, Simms and Ogazi finished neck-and-neck in 44.02. Separated by thousandths of seconds, the third-ranked individual in the SEC sits 0.7 seconds behind the pair.

The two will compete at both Regionals and Nationals this year, but it all starts at conference. Simms holds rookie status, only being a freshman. But that has not stopped him yet, so will Ogazi be the first?
