There’s aggressive on the basepaths, and then there’s whatever Assumption University softball is doing this spring.

The Greyhounds haven’t just led Division II in stolen bases this season — they’ve turned swiping bags into an identity. As of writing, Assumption has piled up 221 stolen bases entering NE10 Championship Weekend, leading all of Division II by a staggering 44 steals and putting together one of the most prolific running seasons the division has seen in more than a decade.

And here’s the wild part: they’ve done it without a single player sitting in the NCAA’s top-10 individually.

Instead, Assumption attacks in waves.

The Greyhounds have three players ranked inside the top-26 nationally in stolen bases and four inside the top-100, making them less dependent on one superstar burner and more reflective of a full-lineup philosophy. Senior Kaitlyn Cahill has led the charge with 40 steals this season, while Maddy Bland and Kaylee Lacomb have each chipped in 37 more. Siena Nardelli has quietly contributed another 26 stolen bases off the bench.

That depth is what makes Assumption so dangerous.

Every inning feels like controlled chaos. A walk instantly becomes a scoring threat. A single can become a runner in scoring position two pitches later. The Greyhounds pressure pitchers, catchers, and middle infielders relentlessly — and eventually, teams crack.

Assumption shattered the Northeast-10 Conference single-season stolen base record of 156 and still has games left to play. Their 221 steals are currently the second-most by any Division II softball team since 1999 and the most by a DII program since 2014.

The Greyhounds aren’t just stealing bases either — they’re doing it efficiently. Assumption has converted 217 of 259 steal attempts this season, an 83.8% success rate.

At times, the speed game has bordered on absurd.

In a March doubleheader sweep over Post, Assumption stole 25 bases in two games, including 12 in game two alone — tying for the most steals by any Division II team in a single game this season.

Then came another burst against AIC in late April, when the Greyhounds swiped five bags in the first inning of game two before the Yellow Jackets could settle in.

It all fits the personality of a team that refuses to wait around for offense.

The Greyhounds don’t overwhelm opponents with home runs — they have just nine long balls all season — but they manufacture pressure better than almost anyone in the country. Every bunt, slap single, and stolen base feels connected in a nonstop offensive chain reaction.

Now, Assumption carries that momentum into the NE10 Championship Weekend after eliminating Pace in a 2-1 thriller to keep its season alive.

And while the Greyhounds may not have the biggest national profile in Division II softball, they’ve built something opponents absolutely dread facing: A lineup where nobody stays put for long.
