The reigning Olympic and World Champion has established himself as the man to beat in the 800m. Still just 21 years old, Wanyonyi has already collected 12 Diamond League victories and continues to deliver on the biggest stages. In Stockholm last year, he ran a world-leading 1:41.95, reinforcing his dominance over the distance.
While on the verge of being a Diamond League legend, Marco Arop has been at the forefront of Wanyonyi's competition.
The Canadian star consistently bested Wanyonyi in their early matchups, building one of the most compelling rivalries in middle-distance running. But that dynamic shifted in dramatic fashion at the 2024 Olympic Games, where Wanyonyi edged Arop by just 0.01 seconds to claim gold.
He backed it up again at the 2025 World Championships, confirming the changing of the guard.
Wanyonyi had consistently fallen short of Arop until flipping the switch at the 2024 Olympic Games and then followed it up at the 2025 World Outdoor Championships. With Wanyonyi on a winning streak over Arop, the two will face off once again, with Arop hoping to rewrite the script.
This year, a new challenger has entered the headlines.
Making his first Diamond League appearance in Stockholm, 18-year-old Cooper Lutkenhaus will face the reigning Diamond League Champion.
The American teenager already owns a World Indoor title (1:44.24) and brings an outdoor personal best of 1:42.27, set at the 2025 U.S. Championships. Despite his age, his times put him firmly in contention.
Just three days later, the same trio is expected to line up again at the Bislett Games in Oslo, setting up a rapid-fire rematch that could define the early Diamond League season.
