Trey Augustine is coming to the American Hockey League. The Detroit Red Wings signed their promising goalie prospect after a brilliant three-year career at Michigan State. Augustine's entry-level deal with the Red Wings won't begin until next season, so he has signed an ATO with the Grand Rapids Griffins, which is where he will complete the 2025-26 season.

The Griffins are among the top teams in the AHL and Augustine can now join forces with the Red Wings other top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa, who has had a remarkable year in the NHL's top farm league. 

Augustine is a highly-decorated goaltender with the added bonus of being a Michigan native within the Detroit organization. He spent the last three seasons at Michigan State and was named a Mike Richter Award finalist and Big Ten Goaltender of the Year in each of the last two seasons. He was also named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award this year.

The Spartans were shocked in the regional final last weekend, losing to Big Ten rival Wisconsin in overtime, ending Augustine's junior season.

Augustine finished his collegiate career with a .922 save percentage and 66 wins in 99 appearances. He also had nine shutouts for the Spartans. Michigan State won the Big Ten regular season championship in each of Augustine's three years between the pipes, which was a first for the program.

The three-year NCAA starter was also a three-time participant at the IIHF World Junior Championship. He became the first U.S. goaltender to win back-to-back gold medals, backstopping Team USA to world titles in 2024 and 2025. Augustine also won gold at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship. He also has a silver at U18s and a bronze at the World Juniors, and was part of the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2024 IIHF Men's World Championship.

He was selected 41st overall by Detroit in the 2023 NHL Draft.

Grand Rapids is on the road for a Wednesday night game against the Rockford IceHogs. It is unclear when Augustine will make his professional debut. Stay tuned for details.
