What To Know About James Hagens
Hagens recently completed his sophomore season at Boston College where he had 23 goals and 47 points on the way to being a Hobey Baker Top 10 Finalist. The 19-year-old Long Island native was selected seventh overall by the Bruins in last June’s draft.
Hagens appeared in the World Junior Championship twice, and the World Under-18 Championship twice. He won gold once in each of those tournaments. He also set the record for most points by a player in a single tournament at the U18 Worlds in 2024.
Boston has the option to sign Hagens to his entry-level contract, but chose to first have him sign an amateur tryout deal with the Providence Bruins to get his feet wet in pro hockey. Here is a full explainer on that process and decision.
Hagens will be eligible to sign with Boston at any time, though if his contract begins this season, he will burn that first year, leaving two full seasons left on his entry-level deal. The Bruins are trying to keep their options open as the team continues to battle for a spot in the playoffs.
Meanwhile, Providence has the best record in the AHL presently and is poised for a deep Calder Cup Playoffs run, which could provide some invaluable experience for the player that the Bruins plan to build more of their next era around.
