Sports fans around the world have spent the last few weeks focused on college basketball, filling out brackets and preparing for the madness that comes with postseason hoops in March.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s fair to turn a cold shoulder to the top collegiate hockey players, who will be battling for their own national title at the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, especially with the sport still in the spotlight after unforgettable performances by the Team USA hockey teams during the recent 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. 

The Team USA men and women swept the hockey gold medals for the first time in history, uniting the entire country and undoubtedly creating countless new hockey fans.

Now, fans of the fastest game on ice, old and new, can get a glimpse of some of the players who will help defend those Olympic titles in four years as they represent their college programs and battle their way to the 2026 Men’s Frozen Four in Las Vegas.

The Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship began with a televised selection show Sunday, and competition for the 16 advancing teams will get underway with the first and second rounds March 26-28. This year’s national champion will be determined April 11 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Six of the teams in the field for the 2026 Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship earned automatic spots in the bracket by winning their conference tournaments, while the remaining contenders had to wait to see if they’d done enough during the season to earn one of the 10 at-large berths.

Determining the at-large teams has become a black-and-white process that uses the NCAA Power Index.

The NPI, introduced for the 2025-2026 season, is a system that houses statistical data and objectively applies the selection criteria to the data based on the weighted criteria established by the Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee.

It is a combination of the following: winning percentage; strength of schedule; home-away multiplier; quality win bonus; and overtime results (when relevant).

For some teams, the math just wasn’t going to be on their side heading into the conference tournaments, so creating some chaos and potentially stealing one of the automatic spots was going to be the only way to keep the season going.

So, what happened?

Well, for starters, four No. 1 seeds – Providence, Michigan State, Quinnipiac and North Dakota – lost in their conference tournaments last weekend, giving life and hope to Merrimack, Ohio State, Clarkson and Minnesota Duluth, respectively, with the first three all being outside the top 15 spots in the latest NPI.

The six conference-winning automatic qualifiers were: 

• Atlantic Hockey America: Bentley; Bentley def. Sacred Heart, 3-2
• Big Ten: Michigan; Michigan def. Ohio State, 7-3
• Central Collegiate Hockey Association: Minnesota State; Minnesota State def. St. Thomas, 4-1
• Eastern College Athletic Conference: Dartmouth; Dartmouth def. Princeton, 2-1 (OT)
• Hockey East: Merrimack; Merrimack def. UConn, 2-1
• National Collegiate Hockey Conference: Denver; Denver def. Minnesota Duluth, 4-3 (2OT)

The 10 at-large berths went to: Cornell, Michigan State, Minnesota Duluth, North Dakota, Penn State, Providence, Quinnipiac, UConn, Western Michigan, Wisconsin

Regional competition (Round 1 and Round 2) will take place at four locations across the country – Albany, New York; Loveland, Colorado; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Worcester, Massachusetts.

The winning team from each four-team regional will advance to the Men’s Frozen Four in Las Vegas. The semifinals will be held April 9, and the winners will return to the ice two days later to play for the 2026 national championship.  

Now that the stage is set, and the bracket is sorted, here’s something to know about each team competing in the single-elimination 2026 Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, along with everything you need to know about the tournament and schedule:

A Look At Each Team In The 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship

Albany Regional

Michigan (29-7-1)

The first NCAA men’s hockey championship in 1948 was claimed by Michigan with an 8-4 victory over Dartmouth. 

The Wolverines rank second all time with nine national titles, but they haven’t won in almost three decades. UM’s championship seasons were 1948, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1964, 1996 and 1998.

The last chance Michigan had to add to that total was in 2011, but the Wolverines fell to Minnesota Duluth 3-2 in overtime. 

Michigan entered the 2026 postseason as the No. 1 team in the NPI and rolled to the title at the 2026 Big Ten Hockey Tournament, taking down Ohio State 7-3 on Saturday, while proving wrong the preseason votes who picked the Wolverines to finish fourth in the conference. 

Minnesota Duluth (23-14-1)

The Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team was on a bit of a heater with a runner-up finish in 2017 and back-to-back national championships in 2018 and 2019, but COVID-19 derailed things with the cancellation of the 2020 Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship.

The run also included NCHC titles in 2017 and 2019, along with a return to the top of the conference in 2022, also the last time the Bulldogs reached the national tournament. UMD’s last tournament game was a 2-1 loss to eventual national champion Denver on March 26, 2022.

What followed for Minnesota Duluth was three consecutive losing seasons.

So, how did the 2025-2026 campaign turn out?

The Bulldogs already have 10 more wins than last year, but they’re coming off a bit of a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to Denver in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff. 

The good news, though, is that the season isn’t over for UMD, and there’s a chance for some redemption against Penn State to kick off the NCAA Albany Regional. 

Penn State (21-13-2)

When it comes to Penn State, hockey probably isn’t the first thing people think of, but it might be in the top 3 behind wrestling and football.

The history of the hockey squad spans three eras. There were a few exhibition games during the 1909-1910 season. Then, a run of five years of varsity hockey kicked off in 1938, before disbanding. Finally, hockey was back to stay at PSU beginning in 1971. 

The journey took the Nittany Lions through several years in the ACHA, but they were rewarded with seven national titles and nine runner-up finishes. 

The team finally joined NCAA Division I for the 2012-2013 campaign and has enjoyed moderate success. The Nittany Lions won their first Big Ten Hockey Tournament in 2017 and won the regular-season Big Ten title in 2020, though the momentum was halted when COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the conference tournament.

Penn State reached the NCAA Tournament in 2017, 2018, 2023, 2025 and now 2026, despite falling to Michigan in the March 14 semifinals of the 2026 Big Ten Hockey Tournament. 

Bentley (23-11-5)

The Bentley men’s hockey team has been around for nearly half a century, but success on the national stage has been limited.

However, the Falcons are on the move, having just picked up their second – consecutive and overall – AHA title, this time defeating Sacred Heart 3-2.

Bentley is riding a five-game winning streak, and the team’s 23-11-5 record is tied for a program-best win total, set last season. 

Can the Falcons continue that momentum and raise the bar when they take on top-ranking Michigan to open the 2026 Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship?

Worcester Regional 

Michigan State (25-8-2)

Michigan State was the 2026 Big Ten regular-season champion, which earned the Spartans a quarterfinal bye and an automatic spot in the semifinals of the 2026 Big Ten Hockey Tournament.

Unfortunately, they were not able to capitalize on the opportunity and suffered a 3-2 overtime loss to Ohio State.

Already safely in the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, Michigan State can look at the bright side and enjoy the rest and time to regroup before taking aim at the Frozen Four and the team’s first national title since 2007.

Michigan State junior goalie Trey Augustine is a finalist for the 2026 Mike Richter Award, awarded each year to the top goaltender in NCAA Division I men’s hockey. The winner will be announced April 10 during the Frozen Four.

Through the 2026 Big Ten Hockey Tournament, Augustine has given up 67 goals in 32 games, while making 872 saves. 

Dartmouth (23-7-4)

Dartmouth played for the men’s hockey national title during the first two years of the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship in 1948 and 1949, lost both times and never reached the final again. 

In fact, the Big Green haven’t been to the national tournament since 1980, but that’s changing this year.

Dartmouth finished tied for second place in the ECAC and earned a first-round bye for the 2026 ECAC Men’s Hockey Championship. The Big Green took advantage of the free pass and downed Colgate 2-0 in the best-of-three quarterfinals.

In the single-elimination semifinals, Dartmouth easily slipped past Clarkson 4-0, then kept that momentum going in Saturday’s championship game against Princeton. 

The Big Green downed the Tigers in overtime, 2-1, with the winning goal coming from sophomore Tim Busconi. It was his second goal of the season and first game-winning score.

The win marked the first ECAC hockey title for Dartmouth. 

The awards also have rolled in for the Big Green.  

The coaching staff was named the Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. Sophomore Hayden Stavroff is the Ivy League Player of the Year and first-team All-Ivy. He was one of four Dartmouth players to earn All-Ivy honors.

Stavroff doubled down and took home this year’s ECAC Player of the Year award, making him the first Big Green player to win the award since its debut in 1962. He also made the All-ECAC first team and is a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. 

Wisconsin (21-12-2)

It has been 20 years since Wisconsin won its last Division I national title and 16 years since the Badgers had a chance to play for the championship. The team ranks fourth all time with six victories. 

Wisconsin entered the stacked 2026 Big Ten Hockey Tournament as the No. 4 seed and got bounced immediately from the quarterfinals by No. 5 seed and eventual runner-up Ohio State by a 7-1 final score.

Despite the early exit from the Big Ten Tournament, Wisconsin has reached 20 wins for the 40th time and second time in three seasons. 

By the time the Badgers take the ice for the NCAA Tournament, they’ll have been off for more than two weeks, but maybe being well-rested will help the team make the most of its 28th tournament appearance. UW is 37-24-2 all time at the national event. 

UConn (20-12-5)

UConn might’ve been a bubble team for this year’s NCAA Tournament, and winning the 2026 Hockey East Tournament would’ve locked up an automatic spot.

Unfortunately, the Huskies were bested by Merrimack College in the Hockey East final, a back-and-forth battle that ended with Merrimack on top 2-1.

That meant UConn’s fate came down to what happened in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament. A win from Michigan, and the Huskies were in. A win from Ohio State, and UConn’s season was over.

Well, we’re talking about the Huskies here, so it all worked out. But they probably owe the Wolverines some sodas or dinner the next time they see them. 

UConn has new life now, but will have to face a tough Michigan State team. 

Amazingly, despite being around since 1960, UConn only owns one conference title (MAAC in 2000). The team’s only other trip to the NCAA Tournament came last year and included a win over Quinnipiac and a loss to Penn State. 

Loveland Regional

Western Michigan (26-10-1)

Western Michigan is the reigning Division I men’s ice hockey national champion, a 6-2 winner over Boston University in last year’s title tilt. 

The Broncos also claimed the trophy at the 2025 NCHC Tournament, defeating North Dakota (4-2) and Denver (4-3) in the Frozen Faceoff. 

Unfortunately for WMU, the 2026 campaign is on a different trajectory, as Denver was able to get redemption in the conference semifinals, downing the Broncos 2-1 in overtime. That set up a Minnesota Duluth-Denver showdown for the NCHC hardware Saturday. 

Western Michigan’s national championship in 2025 was its first. It was the team’s first appearance in the Frozen Four and 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament. When the Broncos hit the ice for this year’s event, it will mark the fifth consecutive season. 

Denver (25-11-3) 

The University of Denver owns more NCAA men’s ice hockey national championships than any other school, winning 10 times – 1958, 1960, 1961, 1968, 1969, 2004, 2005, 2017, 2022 and 2024 – plus runner-up performances in 1963, 1964 and 1973.

The Pioneers also own a record four NCHC titles (2014, 2018, 2024, 2026) after defeating Minnesota Duluth 4-3 in double-overtime Saturday in the 2026 NCHC Frozen Faceoff. The two previously shared the record for tournament wins, with UMD winning in 2017, 2019 and 2022.

The first year of Denver men’s hockey was 1949. The Pioneers will be making their 35th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2026 and will be looking to reach the Frozen Four for the third consecutive season. 

Among the leaders for Denver is junior Eric Pohlkamp, who was named a NCHC first-teamer and the 2025-2026 NCHC Offensive Defenseman of the Year this month. 

Pohlkamp led all NCAA defensemen this season with 17 goals and 37 points in 38 games and ranks first among all players in the nation with 166 shots on goal.

Cornell (22-10-1)

Cornell men’s hockey has been around since the turn of the century. No, not Y2K, the one before that. The team first hit the ice during the 1900-1901 school year with three games in New York City. 

However, the modern iteration of Cornell hockey didn’t debut until the mid-1950s, and the team found consistent success in the 1960s and 1970s, winning eight consecutive Ivy League titles and a pair of men’s hockey national titles in 1967 and 1970.

The Big Red have reached the Frozen Four eight times, but their most recent appearance was in 2003. Things are picking up in Ithaca, though, as the team is making its fourth consecutive trip to the Men’s Ice Hockey Championship – its 26th overall. 

Beyond the big stage, Cornell has won 14 ECAC Tournament titles, including 2024 and 2025, as well as 27 Ivy League championships – including 2026.

Unfortunately for Cornell, another conference title in 2026 was not in the cards, as the squad suffered a 3-2 loss to Princeton in the ECAC semifinals. The Tigers then lost to Dartmouth in the final.

Regardless, Cornell is back in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and 26th time overall, and the Big Red will face the winningest team in Division I hockey history, Denver.

They’ve met 14 times previously, with Denver leading the series 8-6. Six of those meetings have taken place at the NCAA Tournament, including three in the last four years. Cornell won in 2023, and Denver won in 2024.

Minnesota State (22-10-7)

Was there doubt Minnesota State wouldn’t be playing in the national tournament this year? Probably not, but the Mavericks decided not to leave anything to chance. 

They defeated St. Thomas 4-1 in the 2026 CCHA championship game Friday to claim the Mason Cup for the fourth time in five years.

It was a rematch of last year’s title game, and the same result, this time with senior goalie Alex Tracy stopping 29 of 30 shots from the Tommies. 

MSU takes the CCHA’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and will appear for the 10th time in program history. The closest the Mavericks have come to a national title was a runner-up finish to Denver in 2022, Minnesota State’s first year in the CCHA after playing in the WCHA since the 1999-2000 season. 

Sioux Falls Regional

North Dakota (27-9-1)

North Dakota is another squad in the midst of a resurgence. The Fighting Hawks are No. 2 in the nation this year and looking for their first national title since 2016, the team’s eighth overall.

In the recent NCHC semifinals on March 14, North Dakota was routed by Minnesota Duluth, 5-1. UMD moved on but fell to Denver in the final game of the 2026 NCHC Frozen Faceoff, 4-3 in double-overtime. 

UND has only won the conference tournament one time since its debut in 2014 and again was forced to wait until Sunday’s selection show to get official confirmation of its place in the national tournament. The Fighting Hawks won the event in 2021.

Providence College (23-10-2)

Providence College owns one men’s hockey national title, but it happened more than a decade ago in 2015. The only other time the squad played for the championship was 1985, which ended in a loss to Rensselaer. 

Among the leaders for the Friars this season is forward Roger McQueen, who was named the Pro Ambitions Hockey East Rookie of the Year this week. 

A top-10 pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, Queen’s year in Providence included nine goals and nine assists for 18 points with a +10 rating in league games, and he led all NCHC freshmen with 74 shots on goal. 

Overall, McQueen has found the back of the net 11 times, including three game-winning goals, and tallied 16 assists. 

The accolades for Providence didn’t end on the ice, as head coach Nate Leaman was named the Bob Kullen Award winner as this year’s Hockey East Coach of the Year. He also won the award during the 2015-2016 season, though the team’s national championship came the year before. 

Unfortunately for the Friars, the momentum that led to the awards didn’t carry into the conference tournament, where PC, the No. 1 seed, was defeated by No. 8 Merrimack in the quarterfinals March 14. Merrimack won 3-2 in overtime. 

Quinnipiac (26-9-3)

Quinnipiac hockey in Hamden, Connecticut, began during the 1975-1976 season, and the team going 8-5 overall. The squad had two head coaches over the first five seasons of play, with Jim Armstrong (1980-1994) and Rand Pecknold (1994-current) handling things the rest of the way.

Pecknold entered the 2025-2026 campaign with 666 career wins. 

Heading into the upcoming Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, after a quick 0-2 departure from the ECAC Hockey Tournament, the Bobcats are 26-9-3. That means win No. 700 would have to wait until next year, though winning a national title next month would be a nice way to inch four wins closer to the milestone. 

Quinnipiac was the national runner-up to Yale in 2013 and North Dakota in 2016, but things finally fell into place in 2023 when the Bobcats defeated Minnesota 3-2 in overtime to claim the national title. 

In all, Quinnipiac has been to the NCAA Tournament 11 times prior to 2026, including the three trips to the Frozen Four. 

Merrimack College (21-15-2)

Merrimack College finished eighth in the 2025-2026 Hockey East standings, which made the team’s run to the 2026 Hockey East Tournament title and the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament an extreme uphill battle.

In fact, the Warriors’ battle through the Hockey East bracket required winning the maximum number of games, including consecutive victories against the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams in this season’s conference standings after an opening-round win over No. 9 UMass-Lowell.

Merrimack’s 2-1 win against UConn in Saturday’s championship game earned the Warriors their first Hockey East title in program history. Merrimack also became the first No. 8 seed to win the event.

The Warriors made the move to Division I and Hockey East for the 1989-1990 season. The squad claimed seven ECAC titles from 1966-1989 and won the Division II national championship during the 1977-1978 season.

This year’s NCAA Tournament appearance will be the fourth for the Warriors in Division I play.

About NCAA Hockey

There are 41 NCAA member institutions that sponsor Division I Men’s Ice Hockey teams and are eligible to compete in the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship. 

The programs include more than 1,200 student-athletes across the country.

There also is an annual NCAA women’s hockey tournament, known as the NC Women’s Hockey Championship, and the 2026 edition concluded Sunday afternoon at the Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pennsylvania. 

Ohio State, Northeastern, Penn State and Wisconsin are the four teams that advanced to this year’s Women’s Frozen Four. The semifinals took place Friday, with Ohio State topping Northeastern 5-0, and Wisconsin defeating Penn State 4-3 in overtime. 

In Sunday’s final, Wisconsin successfully defended its 2025 championship, again defeating Ohio State to claim the trophy. This time, the score was 3-2.

It was the fourth consecutive times the two teams tussled for the title, with the Badgers winning in 2023 (1-0), 2025 (4-3 in overtime) and 2026. Ohio State won the 2024 showdown (1-0).

Wisconsin now owns nine wins (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2025, 2026) and four runner-up finishes (2008, 2012, 2017, 2024) since the first Women’s Ice Hockey Championship in 2001. 

When Is The 2026 Men’s Frozen Four?

The 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championship will conclude April 9-11 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. 

This portion of the event, known as the Frozen Four, will feature the four regional champions, which will take place in the national semifinals April 9. The winning teams will play for the title April 11.

When Was The First NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship?

The first NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Championship was held in 1948, with Michigan defeating Dartmouth for the title.

Denver, which last won it all in 2024, owns the most men’s hockey national championships with 10.

The first NC Women’s Hockey Championship was held in 2001, and the first three national titles went to Minnesota Duluth. UMD owns five titles overall, with the last coming in 2010. The team also was the runner-up in 2007 and 2022.

What Teams Won The NCAA Hockey National Titles In 2025?

The Western Michigan men were victorious at the 2025 Frozen Four, winning the first national title in program history with a 6-2 triumph over Boston University. 

On the women’s side in 2025, Wisconsin defeated Ohio State 4-3 in overtime to win the championship. It was the eighth national title for the Badgers, who also topped OSU for the crown in 2023, while the roles were reversed in 2024.

The Ohio Bobcats ended a 22-year drought at the ACHA Men’s Division 1 National Championship with a 3-1 win over Adrian College in the final. 

OU has now won the Murdoch Cup five times
