Mondo Sets Championship Record, Wins Fourth Straight World Indoor Title

Mondo Duplantis again did something that nobody had ever done before.

He was already the first athlete ever to win three consecutive World Indoor pole vault championships -- but he wasn't the only to have three gold medals, as France's Renaud Lavillenie had won three non-consecutive championships in 2012, 2016, and 2018.

But now, there's no discussion. On Saturday in Poland, he became the first to win four titles, in any order, with a new championship record to boot. Greece's Emmanouil Karalis tried his best, but wasn't able to clear 6.20m and had to settle for silver.

Can Mondo Duplantis win a fourth straight World Indoor title? We'll see where he hops in -- last year, he entered the competition at 5.70m and then passed every other height to 6.00m. The only man to stay even with Mondo through 6.05m last year, Greece's Emmanouil Karalis, is in spectacular form having jumped 6.17m this year, but so too is Mondo who broke his own world record just nine days ago.

We got an early look at Duplantis as he cleared 5.50m with ease. American Chris Nilsen and Zach Bradford are both clear over 5.70m, though Bradford took two tries to do it.

Things start to get tough at 5.85m, as Ernest John Obiena, Norway's Simen Guttormsen, and Nilsen all bow out at that height. Bradford manages it after just one miss. Karalis and Duplantis are both perfect to this point.

Karalis is the first to clear 6.05m as Mondo takes a gutsy pass at that height. The last American Bradford took his three shots at 6.00 but couldn't clear the bar as the competition begins to narrow. Note that Karalis did miss his first attempt at 6.00m, which could come back to haunt him in a countback.

The battle for the (likely) bronze is between Australia's Kurtis Marschall and Norway's Sondre Guttormsen. Marschall takes it with the highest-ever bronze clearance at a World Indoors, as he's the only one of them to make 6.00 before both bow out at 6.05m. It's just between Mondo and Karalis now.

Karalis decides to pass until 6.20m, which would be an improvement upon his already-massive 6.17m PB set this season. He had the clearance but not the angle on his first attempt at the height.

Karalis can't clear the bar and settles for silver, as Duplantis is content to set a 6.25m championship record and save the 6.32m attempts for another day.
