It took a 60mH heptathlon world best to do it, but Ashton Eaton's last world record has been wiped off the books.

Simon Ehammer Smashes Ashton Eaton's Heptathlon World Record

It wasn't easy. It took a 60mH world heptathlon best. And in the last grueling event, it took a personal best.

But Switzerland's Simon Ehammer came out of the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships not just a world champion but a world record holder, followed by two Americans Heath Baldwin and Kyle Garland.

Ehammer is known for his strength in the long jump, which he also regularly competes in individually and on the Diamond League circuit.

The world record became a possibility as soon as Ehammer set the world heptathlon best in the 60m hurdles, running 7.62 seconds well clear of the field. His time was so impressive that it would have placed 6th overall in the individual 60m hurdles heats held on that same day.

When it came to the pole vault, Ehammer cleared height after height over 5 meters. He knew he had to build a big cushion, as his 1000m best of 2:42 was slower than Eaton's mark from his 2012 6,645-point world record in Istanbul.

In the end, Ehammer was able to set a personal best in the 1000m to secure the gold and new world record of 6670 points. Behind him, Americans Heath Baldwin and Kyle Garland nabbed the silver and bronze medals.
