Vanderbilt Gets 13-3 Run-Rule Victory Over Texas Tech At 2026 CBS
Vanderbilt picks up its first win in 2026 with a 13-3 run-rule victory over Texas Tech at the 2026 Shriners Children’s College Showdown at Globe Life Field.

It took a few innings for the Vanderbilt offense to get going Saturday against Texas Tech at the 2026 College Baseball Series in Arlington, Texas, and then one huge inning catapulted the Commodores to their first win of the new season.
The two-time national champions broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth inning with two doubles, a pair of home runs, three walks, an infield single and a stolen base, mixed with a wild pitch and two defensive errors from the Red Raiders.
In that inning alone, Braden Holcomb contributed a home run, a double, five RBIs and a run to turn a 1-0 deficit into a seven-run advantage, and the Commodores went on to win 13-3 in a run-rule-shortened contest.
The Commodores put an early end to the game with four runs in the eighth inning.
The battle at GLF, home of the 2023 World Series-winning Texas Rangers, kicked off the second day of the Shriners Children’s College Showdown, and the game was broadcast live on FloCollege and the FloSports app as part of the wire-to-wire coverage of the College Baseball Series.

Texas Tech did respond immediately after Vanderbilt came to life, quickly loading the bases in the top of the fifth inning, but an inning-ending double play from Vanderbilt limited the damage to just one run.
The Red Raiders added another run in the top of the seventh inning, before letting the game slip away.
Vanderbilt, the reigning Southeastern Conference Tournament champion, plated the 13 runs Saturday on 12 hits, paired with two errors from TTU, while leaving another 10 runners on base.
Sophomore infielder Brodie Johnston led the offensive effort with a 3-for-5 performance that included two home runs, three runs scored and two RBIs. Junior Braden Holcomb contributed two hits, including a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored.
The Commodores sent four pitchers to the mound, with junior right-hander Brennan Seiber getting the win. He pitched two innings, giving up one run on three hits. The starter was MLB prospect Austin Nye, who went four innings, giving up one run on two hits, while striking out six and walking two.
Texas Tech used six pitchers in the game, with starter Lukas Pirko taking the loss. He surrendered seven runs (five earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out two.
Offensively, Texas Tech’s three runs came on six hits, and half of the hits were from junior outfielder Kyeler Thompson, who went 3 for 4 and scored a run.
Believe it or not, despite many decades of play for both teams, and the fact that both squads made it to the Men’s College World Series in 2014 and 2019, Saturday’s meeting was the first in history between Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.
The Commodores entered the new campaign ranked 23rd in the 2026 D1Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings, while the Red Raiders did not make the list, as they’re coming off a tough 2025 season and losing record.
Both teams lost their season-opening games Friday, with Vanderbilt losing a lead late in a 5-4 loss to Texas Christian University, and Texas Tech losing to Oklahoma, 10-3.
All six teams at the Shriners Children’s College Showdown will play three games over the weekend. Arkansas and Oklahoma State are the other two programs in town for the first of three weekends of action at Globe Life Field.
The schedule includes the Shriners Children’s College Showdown (Feb. 13-15), Amegy Bank College Baseball Series – Weekend 2 (Feb. 20-22) and Amegy Bank College Baseball Series presented – Weekend 3 (Feb. 27-March 1), all of which will bring 18 teams to Arlington.
This is the third appearance for the Red Raiders at the College Baseball Series in the last five seasons, including the first games of their 2022 and 2024 campaigns.
The Commodores also opened the 2023 season at Globe Life Field, where they lost to TCU, before beating Oklahoma State and Texas to round out the weekend.
Vanderbilt will wrap things up this year with the opening game Sunday, taking on Oklahoma State at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. Texas Tech will follow at 3:30 p.m. against No. 7 Arkansas, and the event will end with No. 10 TCU and Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m. EST.

After the second out, back-to-back errors from Texas Tech gives Vandy runners on first and second, and the chaos necessitates a pitching change for TTU. Sophomore left-hander comes in for Pirko.
Pirko goes 3 2/3, giving up five runs on six hits, while walking two and striking out two. He threw 72 pitches.

About Texas Tech Baseball
Texas Tech had an off season in 2025, going 20-33 overall and 13-17 in Big 12 play to land in the bottom half of the conference standings.
The Red Raiders didn’t fare much any better in the 2025 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, where they lost to Cincinnati in the opening round to conclude their season.
Recent lull aside, Texas Tech has had a solid couple of decades.
The Red Raiders have won five Big 12 titles (1997, 1998, 2016, 2017, 2019) and made four appearances at the Men’s College World Series (2014, 2016, 2018, 2019).
Heading into this season, Texas Tech earned the No. 9 spot in the 14-team 2026 Big 12 Baseball Preseason Poll, while a handful of players received individual recognition.
Junior outfielder Logan Hughes was named to the NCBWA Division I Preseason All-America Third Team, and catcher Matt Quintanar landed on the NCBWA Division I Preseason All-America Fourth Team.
Both standouts also found their way on to the 2026 D1Baseball Top Draft Prospects list, along with teammates Parker Hyutra (RHP), Connor Shouse (INF) and Kyler Thompson (OF).
Infielder Linkin Garcia and pitcher Adam Hayes earned recognition as part of the 2026 D1Baseball Impact Freshman list.
Did You Know: After playing from 1926-1929, the Texas Tech baseball team went on hiatus until 1954.

About Vanderbilt Baseball
Vanderbilt finished the 2025 college baseball season with a 43-18 record after being bounced from the NCAA Nashville Regional.
The Commodores, the 2014 and 2019 NCAA national champions, opened the 2025 Division I Baseball Championship with a win over Wright State but then lost to Louisville and Wright State in consecutive games to close the door on their campaign.
After finishing tied for third place in the competitive SEC last year and earning the No. 4 seed for the SEC Tournament, Vanderbilt went on to win the tournament and earned an opportunity to add another national title.
In the championship game of the 2025 SEC Tournament, the Vanderbilt pitching staff held off Ole Miss to secure a 3-2 victory and the fifth SEC Tournament title for the Commodores.
Following the event, the SEC found the national spotlight with a record 13 (of 16) SEC teams advancing to the Division I Baseball Championship.
This season, Vanderbilt has been picked to finish fourth in possibly the most competitive league in all of NCAA athletics, while the Commodores hope to get the momentum going in the right direction with another winning weekend at Globe Life after going 2-1 in 2023.
