A Look At ACC Baseball Ahead Of The 2026 Season
A Look At ACC Baseball Ahead Of The 2026 Season
The ACC still is looking to build a legacy in baseball. Is 2026 the year the conference claims its third national title? Here's a look at the season ahead.

Despite being around since 1953 and winning 196 team national championships, the Atlantic Coast Conference has not been able to find much trophy-lifting success on the baseball diamond.
Since 2019, the Southeastern Conference has won every baseball national title, and while the ACC has had a noteworthy presence at the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, the conference has not been able to finish the job.
Actually, the list of the ACC’s nearly 200 national titles only includes two baseball crowns, won by Wake Forest (1955) and Virginia (2015).
But what started with seven programs more than 70 years ago has grown to include 18 schools – 16 in baseball – and a few of the later additions earned multiple baseball championships in other conferences.

The ACC’s talent level and potential are undeniable, as there are some great numbers to back that up.
The conference has placed at least one team in the last 19 Men’s College World Series and at least six teams in each of the last 21 editions of the Division I Baseball Championship. Five teams played in a Super Regional in 2025.
Is 2026 the year the ACC adds more baseball hardware to its trophy case, which includes the rewards that have come with 103 women’s team titles, 87 men’s championships and six coed fencing victories?
The seven charter members of the ACC were Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest.
All but Maryland and South Carolina remain, with four of the originals being among the eight ACC teams starting the 2026 campaign ranked in the top 25.
Reigning ACC regular-season champion Georgia Tech, now with a new head coach, is the highest-ranked ACC team in the 2026 D1Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings, landing at No. 5.

What Happened In The ACC In 2025?
There were a few changes within the ACC before the 2025 season even kicked off.
In 2024, the conference featured two seven-team divisions (Atlantic and Coastal), but the 2025 campaign saw the addition of two more programs – Stanford and the University of California, Berkeley – which resulted in changes to the structure of the standings and to the format of the ACC Baseball Championship.
First, came the change from two divisions back to just one.
When it was time for the postseason, all 16 teams advanced to the six-day single-elimination tournament in May.
The top four seeds were based off the teams’ performances during the regular season, and their success earned them two byes in the tournament, sending them directly to the quarterfinals.
Seeds No. 5 through No. 8 earned one bye, while No. 9-16 made up the four first-round games.
Since 2006, the ACC Baseball Championship had been played in a pool-play or round-robin-style format. The tournament last expanded its field size in 2017, moving from 10 to 12 teams.
The 2025 ACC Baseball Championship was held in Durham, North Carolina, marking its 14th visit to the home of Duke University. Duke won the 2024 event.
As the 2025 season rolled to a close, Georgia Tech claimed the ACC’s regular-division title and earned the No. 1 seed for the tournament. Florida State, North Carolina and NC State were second, third and fourth, respectively.
North Carolina emerged as the winner at the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship, defeating Clemson 14-4 in the championship game May 25. It was the ninth title for the Tar Heels (1982, 1983, 1984, 1990, 2007, 2013, 2019, 2022, 2025).
The strength of the ACC became evident the next day, when nine ACC teams advanced to the 64-team NCAA Division I Baseball Championship – North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, NC State, Wake Forest and Miami.
It marked the most ACC teams in the national tournament since 2022 and the sixth consecutive season with at least eight teams taking part.
The 2026 ACC Baseball Championship will be held May 19-24 at Truist Field in Charlotte, North Carolina.
*Southern Methodist University joined the ACC for the 2024-2025 school year, but SMU does not have a baseball team. Syracuse is the other member of the 18-school ACC that does not sponsor baseball.
