Gulf South baseball has a history of national relevance, going back to the conference's first D2 national championship in 1979, won by Valdosta State. Delta State also won a title in 2004 and more recently, West Florida won the D2 College World Series in 2011.

Last season, the GSC sent a total of four teams to the NCAA D2 Baseball Tournament, including West Florida, Delta State, West Alabama, and Mississippi College. 

The Argos made it to the Super Regionals, before being dispatched by the eventual national champion, Tampa. UWF shows up in both national polls to start the 2026 season, sitting at No. 17 in the NCBWA poll and No. 25 in the D2 Baseball Top 25. 

The Argonauts were also chosen to win the conference in the 2026 GSC Coaches Preseason Poll.
