One of the newest divisions will directly affect the D2 landscape as Bowling has been upgraded as a championship sport for both men and women.
The decision to upgrade bowling to a championship sport came from the D2 schools who already carry bowling preferring to compete in a D2 Championship compared to a National Collegiate championship.
To be considered for reclassification to a championship sport, at least a minimum of 40 schools must be participating in the sport to consider a review.
According to the press release, there were 38 schools participating in the 2023-24 collegiate year. This was enough to warrant a review.
The reaction to bowling being upgraded to a championship sport has been positive as Terri Steeb Gronau, the vice president of D2 said this in the press release.
"The establishment of a Division II women's bowling championship is in direct response to the voice of the membership and the growth of the sport. This moment affirms opportunity and ensures that these student-athletes have a championship that reflects their division and dedication." - Terri Steeb Gronau
The inaugural bowling championship is slated for Spring 2028. More information on bowling can be found in the NCAA press release.
