Did You Know: High School Wrestling Is Relatively New In Arkansas
Believe it or not, despite becoming the country’s 25th state way back in 1836, Arkansas was one of the last to add high school wrestling. Actually, it nearly was THE last state to do so, coming in at No. 49 when the AAA approved wrestling for the 2008-2009 season.
The sport debuted with 44 boys programs and now sees more than 100 teams hit the mats each season, including girls programs, which joined the party in 2019.
Prior to 2019, the girls wrestled with, and against, the boys. In 2015, Destiny Nunez became the state’s first female champion
