Round 4 of Pool 1 in the Investec Champions Cup delivers one of the most consequential fixtures of the weekend, as Toulouse hosts the Sale Sharks at Stade Ernest-Wallon. 

For a club that went nearly seven years without losing a pool-stage match, Toulouse enters the final round in unfamiliar territory after consecutive road defeats. With qualification still unresolved, the margin for error has narrowed dramatically for the competition’s most decorated side.

Toulouse suffered back-to-back Champions Cup losses away from home against the Glasgow Warriors and Saracens, both played in harsh winter conditions. The latter, a 20-14 defeat in Round 3, followed a stunning collapse against Glasgow in December, after Toulouse once held a 21-0 lead. 

Those results have left the preseason favorites in danger of missing the Round of 16 entirely with a home loss. 

While a recent Top 14 defeat to USAP came with a heavily rotated squad, the European pressure is very real, as Toulouse balances seeding scenarios that range from a top-2 finish to potentially sliding to the No. 16 seed.

Sale arrives in France with confidence and history within reach. 

The Sharks clinched a Round of 16 berth with a 26-10 win over the Hollywoodbets Sharks in Round 3, adding to an impressive 35-14 victory at Clermont in Round 2. Few clubs win twice in France during Champions Cup pool play, something Sale is attempting. 

Still in contention for the top spot in Pool 1, Sale could also slip to fourth without a bonus point. 

Toulouse, meanwhile, has won the last three meetings between the clubs, including a 38-15 victory in the 2025 Champions Cup playoffs, adding further weight to a pivotal European showdown.
