Penn State Wrestling Goes On The Road, Defeats Wyoming 40-7

The Penn State wrestling team is on the verge of history after winning its 75th consecutive dual Saturday night on the road against Wyoming

The Nittany Lions won the first eight matches on the 10-bout slate and quickly locked up the overall win. They’re now one victory away from tying the NCAA Division I record of 76, set by Oklahoma State between 1937 and 1951.

Saturday’s showdown between No. 2 Penn State and No. 24 Wyoming at Wyoming’s Arena-Auditorium was the second meeting in history between the two teams, and while the Cowboys fell 40-7, there was a lot for Wyoming fans to celebrate.

Every minute of the clash was broadcast live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app, and the replay can be accessed anytime in the FloWrestling archives.

Penn State won last year’s meeting against Wyoming 54-0 as part of a 15-0 season that ended with a fourth consecutive NCAA Division I team national championship.

On their own home turf this time, the Cowboys drew a program-record crowd of 4,686 fans and sent them home with something to cheer about – a pair of wins to avoid a second straight shutout and end the night on a high note.

In the 197-pound weight class, All-American Joey Novak, a junior who finished fifth at the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, defeated redshirt freshman Connor Mirasola by major decision, 10-2, to log Wyoming’s first points against Penn State.

Though that only cut the deficit to 40-4, it got the Cowboys and the crowd ready for the final match of the night.

The 285-pound finale featured Wyoming sophomore Christian Carroll, who is ranked No. 13 by FloWrestling, as the favorite against Penn State freshman Cole Mirasola, despite the latter being ranked No. 9 this year.

Carroll won by decision, 10-4, to cap the night at the Arena-Auditorium.

The victory helps Penn State improve to 4-0 this season, along with a dominant performance at the Black Knight Invitational in New York last month.

The Nittany Lions now will be off until the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in Nashville, Tennessee, on Dec. 20, followed by a home meet against Rutgers on Jan. 10.

Can Penn State match and surpass the longstanding Oklahoma State record?

Wyoming finished last season at 12-6 and closed the campaign with a 22nd-place performance at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, which was the team’s best finish since 2018, an effort led by a Novak’s fifth-place performance at 197 pounds.

This season, the Cowboys are 2-3 after Saturday’s loss to Penn State, but they can hang their hats on the strong finish, as well as a solid performance at the recent 2025 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational, where they finished seventh in the team standings and had individual runner-up finishes from Novak (197) and Carroll (285).

Another huge note is that for the first time in more than four years, Penn State has fallen from the No. 1 spot in FloWrestling’s NCAA DI Wrestling Rankings.

The Nittany Lions were passed this week by Ohio State, which has been tested quite a bit more this year than PSU and picked up a huge win – and $200,000 top prize – at the inaugural National Duals Invitational.

While Penn State dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the Dec. 8 rankings, Wyoming surged from No. 31 to No. 24.
