The Chicago White Sox can draft anyone they want this summer after the team with a 27.7% chance of winning the MLB Draft Lottery did exactly that on Dec. 9 during the MLB Winter Meetings.

The White Sox, who would have had the best odds in 2025 had they been allowed to win a top-10 pick, finally get the chance to draft a potentially difference-making player No. 1. UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky and Alabama shortstop Justin Lebron are among the names that could be called early the Sunday before the MLB All-Star Game in July.

The White Sox were ineligible to win the lottery in 2025 because they had drafted in the lottery three years in a row. They settled for the No. 10 pick in the draft despite having the worst record in baseball. The club won 19 more games in 2025, but that merely brought the record from 41 wins in 2024 to 60.

The MLB Draft has become much more impactful in recent years. The American League Rookie of the Year winner in 2025 was Nick Kurtz, a top-10 pick from the 2024 class, while the 2024 National League Rookie of the Year winner was Paul Skenes, who was the No. 1 pick in the draft.

In 2025, 2024 No. 2 pick Chase Burns, No. 4 pick Kurtz, No. 6 pick Jac Caglianone and No. 8 pick Christian Moore were all top-10 picks who made their debuts. Meanwhile, No. 20 pick Trey Yesavage became one of the best pitchers in the playoffs for the Blue Jays and started Game 1 of the World Series.

The Blue Jays, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies and Yankees are expected to recieve a 10-pick penalty for  on their first picks for exceeding the second surcharge threshold of the Competitive Balance Tax.

The MLB Draft begins the Sunday of MLB All-Star Week, which is being held in Philadelphia from July 11-July 14.
