Penn State and Drexel met last year, with the Nittany Lions playing host and winning 41-3 as part of a 15-0 campaign. The Dragons also were the visiting team the first time they met (2002-2003), with Penn State taking the dual 26-6.
The years in between those meetings was when Penn State became the wrestling powerhouse it is today.
The Nittany Lions rank third all-time with 13 team titles at the NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships – 12 of which have come since 2011 as three four-peats (2011-2014; 2016-2019; 2022-2025).
Can Penn State break the cycle and win a fifth straight championship this season?
Top-ranked Penn State had the opportunity to compete against the nation’s best at the recent inaugural National Duals Invitational in mid-November but declined the invitation.
The National Duals Invitational featured 11 of the top 12 teams from the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and eight of the top 10 teams from this season’s early rankings, with Ohio State winning the event and $200,000 top prize.
Instead, Penn State kicked off the new season with a visit from Oklahoma, a dual the Nittany Lions won easily, 45-0.
Just before Thanksgiving, PSU traveled north for the Black Knight Invitational in West Point, New York, where the team had nine individual champions and six runners-up. In all, 20 wrestlers participated for PSU, and 19 placed.
Drexel was 11-10 overall last year and finished second to Lehigh at the 2025 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships, the best finish for the Dragons in program history. All 10 of the team’s wrestlers had a top-8 individual finish.
At the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships, Drexel failed to score any points and finished tied for 60th place. Mickey O'Malley, Jasiah Queen and Jordan Soriano were the three Dragons who qualified for the national event.
This year, Drexel opened the new season with wins over Duke (37-4) and Morgan State (38-9), along with participating in three other multi-team events.
The Dragons have been recognized for the early success and landed at a tie for No. 50 on the most recent 2025-2026 NCAA DI Wrestling Rankings.
