Simon Fraser is the only college in Canada to compete in the NCAA. And that will change after the 2027 season.

The Burnaby, British Columbia-based school will likely transition to the U SPORTS division — Canada’s version of the NCAA. Simon Fraser competed in the NAIA until transitioning to NCAA Division II in 2009.

“The message to our athletes is that our goals and process don’t change,” said SFU women’s wrestling coach Justin Abdou, a four-time NAIA champion for the school. “Essentially, we’ve had two tournaments removed from our schedule: NCAA regionals and nationals.

“As we’ve always done, we will seek out the best competition and aspire to reach the highest level of our sport.”

Simon Fraser has a deep wrestling tradition, highlighted by Olympic champions Helen Maroulis (2016) and Daniel Igali (2000).

The women’s wrestling team won the 2013 WCWA Championships under Mike Jones, a two-time national finalist for Oregon State (1971, 1973). Jones coached the men’s team to NAIA titles in 1988 and 1993.
