Sarnia Sting Fire Head Coach Alan Letang Amid Slow Start
The Sarnia Sting have relieved head coach Alan Letang of his duties. The former Canada national team coach was in his fifth season with the club.

It has been a tough season to start for the Sarnia Sting and the team is making an abrupt change behind the bench. The Sting announced Saturday night that head coach Alan Letang has been relieved of his duties effective immediately.

The move came a day after Sarnia had dropped a 5-3 decision to Peterborough, falling to 6-10-3-1 on the season, marking the second-worst record in the Western Conference.
According to a statement released by the team, the organization felt that a new voice was needed to guide the young squad.
“Alan is a good person and a strong coach who represented our organization with class every day,” said Sarnia GM Dylan Seca in a released statement. “This was not an easy decision, but we feel it is the right one for our group at this time. We thank Alan for everything he has done for the Sting and wish him the best going forward.”

Letang was in his fifth season with the Sting and sixth as a head coach in the OHL. He also had spent one season with Sarnia as a player back in the 1994-95 season before embarking on a pro career that saw him appear in 14 NHL games.
Letang’s ouster comes just two years after he had received one of the highest honors in junior coaching, being named the head coach of Canada’s national junior team. That squad finished the tournament with a disappointing quarterfinal exit only a few months after he had led Canada’s U18 team to Hlinka-Gretzky Cup gold.
The 50-year-old Ontario native started his coaching career with Medvescak Zagreb, formerly of the KHL. He later returned to the OHL as an assistant coach with the Owen Sound Attack before being elevated to the head job. He joined Sarnia in 2021.
Twice an assistant for Canada at the World Juniors, winning gold in both trips, Letang got the nod for the head job of the national junior team in 2024.
Sarnia had missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, after reaching the conference finals in 2023 following a 41-win regular season.
The Sting are set to play the Kingston Frontenacs on the road Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
