Investec Champions Cup Countdown: Why UBB Rugby Can Win It All... Again
The Investec Champions Cup is three days away. FloRugby is making a case for each team to win it all. That includes the defending champion, Bordeaux Bègles.
The 2025-2026 Investec Champions Cup begins Dec. 5, and we're just three days away from the Sale Sharks hosting the Glasgow Warriors at 3 p.m. ET at CorpAcq Stadium.
The Investec Champions Cup will determine the best team in Europe (and South Africa), as every contender aims to take the title from defending champion Union Bordeaux-Bègles of the Top 14.

But like in the film "The Highlander," there can only be one winner.
Every club will enter the competition believing it can lift the trophy on May 23, 2026, at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.
And that includes Union Bordeaux Bègles of the Top 14.
Here are three reasons why Union Bordeaux Bègles can win the 2025-2026 Investec Champions Cup:
The Reigning Champions Of Europe Call Bordeaux Home
It has not been a stellar season in the Top 14 for Union Bordeaux-Bègles, or UBB.
The team is 6-0-3 and fourth on the table, so it hasn’t been that bad, but the season didn’t start well.
UBB lost to Racing 92 in Round 2 in Paris, then went back to Paris and lost 28-7 to Stade Français in Week 4 to drop to 2-0-2. Then, UBB was thrashed by Toulouse on the road, 56-13. Now, UBB is 6-0-3.
And none of that matters, because the Champions Cup isn’t the Top 14 — and the records are 0-0-0.
UBB finally broke through and won its first Champions Cup in May 2025. The team, powered by French internationals and arguably the country’s second-best player, Damian Penaud, captured the major European title that had been so elusive.
Bordeaux looks as strong now as La Rochelle did when it went back-to-back.
A Tough Pool Schedule Could Help UBB In The Knockout Stage
UBB will open the competition in South Africa against the Bulls, and we’ll wait to see if the club opts to be fully competitive in the Southern Hemisphere.
But the schedule makers did UBB a favor by sending the team to play the Bristol Bears, instead of Gallagher PREM Rugby leader Northampton.
The Bulls, Saints and Bears make for a tough set of pool-play matches, and because of that difficulty, UBB may need to chase a big bonus-point win over the Scarlets at home.
Maybe Teams Will Drink Too Much Wine On Their Visit
Northampton and the Scarlets travel to Bordeaux, France, for a rugby match — and that may be dangerous for players who love to talk about tannins and tilt wine glasses. Bordeaux is the world’s foremost wine city.
Some call it the “capital of wine,” and there are about 10,000 wine-producing châteaux and 13,000 grape growers in the area.
Basically, people go to this city — the sixth-largest in France — to drink wine, enjoy the history and watch UBB win rugby matches… probably.

Damian Penaud is the No.7-ranked player on the list, and he's five spots higher than Louis Bielle-Biarrey, who very well could be in the top 10 in 2026.
