It took two overtimes against a resilient team constantly on the verge of a breakthrough season, but Ferris State was able to lock up a second consecutive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title last week with a 51-45 victory over Saginaw Valley State.

And, for the first time at the NCAA Division II level, the conference championship comes with an automatic spot in the Division II Football Championship, which now will allow the Bulldogs to continue their pursuit of a fourth national title in five years.

In the meantime, all eight GLIAC teams will be in action this week for the final game of the regular season. A couple will be looking to prove themselves worthy of an at-large bid to the playoffs, while others will just be hoping to close the year on a high note.

Ferris State, the Division II national champion in 2021, 2022 and 2024 and the No. 1 team in the country this year, enters Week 11 at 10-0 overall, 6-0 in conference play aiming to reach 11 wins for the 12th time in program history.

One thing the teams will have to think about this year is that with the change to the playoff format and number of teams in the postseason bracket, the year’s top performers no longer will be awarded a first-round bye.

Instead of 28 teams, the playoff field has been increased to 32 teams – 16 automatic spots for conference champions and 16 at-large selections.

The next big question to answer is how many other GLIAC teams will be joining Ferris State in the Division II Playoffs?

In the latest FloCollege D2 Football Rankings, perennial powerhouse Grand Valley State landed in the No. 21 spot, up three places thanks to an 18-15 win over Michigan Tech, which has fallen out of the top 25.

In the latest Division II regional rankings, only Ferris State – No. 1 in Super Region 3 – was among the 40 teams mentioned.

Once the regular season concludes, eight teams from each region will advance to the playoffs.

For now, though, let’s focus on the final week of the 2025 campaign for most of the GLIAC teams, as there still are some cool storylines.

Here’s a look at the GLIAC schedule for Week 11, along with a prediction for each game.

Note: All start times for Saturday are Eastern. Games marked with an asterisk will be streamed live on FloCollege.

GLIAC Teams In Week 11

Nov. 15 (Saturday)

* Saginaw Valley State At Michigan Tech, Noon

Once again, SVSU and Michigan Tech took us on a roller coaster ride for the latest installment of their “will they, won’t they” saga.

Will they or won’t they finally break through in the GLIAC and end the Ferris State/Grand Valley State domination of the last 25 years?

It looked as if Saginaw Valley State might get it done, a reality that came into sight when the Cardinals edged GVSU 20-19 on Oct. 18. Unfortunately, when SVSU unexpectedly fell to Davenport two weeks later, things started becoming all too familiar.

Down, but not out, the Cardinals made a valiant play for at least a potential share of the conference title by pushing Ferris State to the brink last week, before falling 51-45 in a double-overtime thriller.

Now, Ferris State is home polishing its latest GLIAC trophy and planning for the postseason, while SVSU is part of a log jam in the conference standings. After the Bulldogs’ perfect record (6-0), four teams are tied at 4-2 in GLIAC action – SVSU, GVSU, Davenport and Michigan Tech.

At least one of those teams will be left behind this weekend when SVSU (5-5 overall) visits Michigan Tech (7-3 overall) for a showdown Saturday at high noon.

The Huskies once again fell victim to both Ferris State and Grand Valley State this season, when a push for the top 25, or even the playoffs, definitely seemed like a possibility.

Michigan Tech won last year’s meeting with SVSU, while the Cardinals won the three clashes before that. Saginaw Valley State leads the all-time series 25-12. They played for the first time in 1980.

On the plus side for the Huskies, they’ve secured seven or more wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2015. Last year, they were 7-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play, finishing tied for third place with SVSU and Davenport.

PREDICTION: Michigan Tech has had a better season overall, but SVSU really stepped up against the top two teams in the conference. However, both have to be coming into this one pretty deflated after last week’s drama. Home-field advantage is the determining factor here. Michigan Tech wins 28-24.

* Ferris State At Davenport, Noon

Two weeks ago, Davenport played spoiler and all but ended Saginaw Valley State’s push for the GLIAC title and automatic bid to the playoffs.

Last week, Davenport did something only one other team has done since 2022 – lost to Northern Michigan.

The contest with the Wildcats was an absolute nailbiter that took four overtimes to decide, with a Davenport fumble in the end zone allowing NMU the opportunity to take the 47-45 win with one last two-point conversion. Even though it didn’t count toward their conference records, losing is never fun.

It’s simply an off year for Davenport, which is coming off three seasons with seven or more wins. The Panthers enter the season finale against Ferris State at 5-4 overall and as one of the four teams that are 4-2 in GLIAC games.

For Ferris State, this will be a victory lap, as the conference title, playoff spot and likely a No. 1 seed are locked up.

It would be a perfect opportunity to get the starters some rest and let less-experienced team members get some reps, but there’s more to it. The Bulldogs have all the momentum right now. They’re also riding a 24-game winning streak. Oh, and the first round of the playoffs is less than 10 days away.

Obviously, they’re doing just about everything right this year, and they’re outscoring their opponents 675-197.

Were the Bulldogs pushed and tested against SVSU last week at probably the worst time of the season? Yes. But they prevailed and likely worked hard all week to correct the things that put them in that position in the first place.

PREDICTION: Ferris State will jump out to a big halftime lead and THEN switch up the personnel a little bit for the second half. Ferris State wins 45-13.

* Roosevelt At Grand Valley State, 1 p.m.

Roosevelt has been involved in some pretty high-scoring games this season, including a 48-14 win over Wayne State that lifted the Lakers off the ground floor of the conference standings.

Roosevelt is 2-7 overall, including a season-opening win over Quincy, and 1-5 in GLIAC action. Wayne State is in the bottom slot at 0-10 overall and 0-6 in conference games.

While Roosevelt is fighting to not finish tied for last place, the other Lakers, from Grand Valley State, are aiming to finish the year tied for second place in the conference, while making one final push for an at-large berth to the playoffs.

At 6-3 overall and 4-2 in conference games, GVSU has been able to hang on to a spot in the top 25, but the Lakers are dangerously close to missing the postseason for the first time since 2019.

Roosevelt is new to Division II and the GLIAC, so there isn’t much history there with Grand Valley State. GVSU won last year’s meeting 34-21. This time, Roosevelt will travel to the iconic Lubbers Stadium in Allendale, Michigan, for the first time.

PREDICTION: GVSU isn’t the team it has been, but the Lakers should have no problem with Roosevelt this week. The big question is, will it be enough to send Grand Valley State back to the playoffs? Grand Valley State wins 42-24.

* Wayne State At Northern Michigan, 1 p.m.

While Ferris State was securing the GLIAC title, the Northern Michigan Wildcats were working even harder to guarantee that they wouldn’t finish the 2025 season at the bottom of the conference standings for the third consecutive year.

NMU battled Davenport through four overtime periods and escaped with a 47-45 win, their second victory of the season after snapping a 28-game losing streak that spanned all of the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.

It didn’t count as a conference win, since the two played earlier in the season, but going from zero wins in back-to-back seasons to a two-win campaign has to feel amazing for the Wildcats. Plus, Davenport is a decent squad, and the game was a hard-fought instant classic.

This week’s meeting with Wayne State is one Northern Michigan likely had circled on the schedule as a winnable contest, potentially as the one that determined who’d finish at the bottom of the standings this year.

Now, it’ll be Wayne State fighting for its first win of the year against a surging NMU team.

Northern Michigan is 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play after beating Roosevelt in October. WSU is winless.

Will Wayne State finish with a win over the Wildcats for the second straight year, or will Northern Michigan win three games for the first time since a 4-7 performance in 2022?

PREDICTION: Northern Michigan is having a special season. NMU wins this one 42-28.

How Did The GLIAC Football Teams Perform In Week 10?

  • Ferris State def. Saginaw Valley State, 51-45 (2OT)
