The 2025-2026 Investec Champions Cup begins Dec. 5, and we're just five days away from the Sale Sharks hosting the Glasgow Warriors at 3 p.m. ET at CorpAcq Stadium.

The Investec Champions Cup will determine the best team in Europe (and South Africa), as every contender aims to take the title from defending champion Union Bordeaux-Bègles of the Top 14.

But like in the film "The Highlander," there can only be one winner.

Every club will enter the competition believing it can lift the trophy on May 23, 2026, at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, Spain.

And that includes the Vodacom Bulls of the United Rugby Championship.

Here are three reasons why the Vodacom Bulls can win the 2025-2026 Investec Champions Cup:

If The Vodacom Bulls Take It Seriously, They Are Among The Legit Favorites

Ah, a story as old as… well, 2022, when the EPCR welcomed the South African clubs — which had just joined the United Rugby Championship after years in Super Rugby — into the competition. Will the Bulls take the Champions Cup seriously?

It has been a trend over the last few years that South African clubs have chosen to focus more on their domestic league.

Perhaps the clubs haven’t put their best teams on the field — especially in Europe — for these matches. But that trend apparently is changing, as most clubs have decided to place renewed emphasis on the Champions Cup.

And if that’s true, we could get a South African champion this year — and the Bulls certainly have the winning pedigree and players to make it happen.

The Bulls have reached the URC Grand Final three times since joining the league (2022, 2024 and 2025), hosting that final twice. They’ve also reached the Champions Cup Round of 16 twice (2023 and 2024) but haven’t been a regular in the ICC playoffs like the other great clubs the Bulls certainly belong alongside.

So far, the Bulls 3-0-2 in the URC, while also missing many of the the team's international players.

There Be Boks On This Roster

Canan Moodie, Wilco Louw, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Cameron Hanekom and Handré Pollard all are  members of the Bulls. Pollard — perhaps the best kicker in the world — was the Bulls’ big addition.

Arendse, Hanekom and Pollard all appear on FloRugby’s Top 100 Players Rankings: Pollard at No. 32, Arendse at No. 44 and Hanekom at No. 83.

They also have a coach who one day could be elevated to the Springboks job when Rassie Erasmus eventually decides to retire.

Johan Ackermann is one of the most accomplished club coaches in the game, and the 55-year-old native of Benoni, South Africa, likely is on the shortlist for the Springboks.

The South Africa Factor

We could write this section for each of the three South African clubs in the competition — and for the Lions in the EPCR Challenge Cup — because the travel to South Africa makes it challenging for clubs outside the URC (and even for those within it).

We’ll just address it here, since the Bulls are up first.

As difficult as it can be for South African clubs to travel to Europe for the Champions Cup, it’s equally tough for opponents heading south.

The Bulls host defending champion Bordeaux at Loftus Versfeld — in the northern, mountainous city of Pretoria — in Round 1. They also play the Bristol Bears there in January.

Hosting UBB at home is a huge boost to the Bulls’ knockout chances. That said, trips to England to play Northampton and to France to face Pau will put even more emphasis on the Bulls’ home matches.
