Two hundred years ago, the English poet John Keats came up with a concept called “Negative Capability.”

The idea is that the writers and creatives he admired were capable of accepting the ambiguity of life. They could tolerate the thick soup of uncertainty.

In Keats’ view, the magic comes not from knowing the ending but from lingering in the tension, and right now Division 2 football is nothing if not pure tension.

Of the many wild turns this week: No. 1 Ferris State nearly lost to Saginaw Valley. CSU Pueblo mounted a second-half comeback against Colorado Mines. Western Colorado, perfect until two weeks ago, has now dropped two straight.

Perhaps most unlikely of all, Valdosta State—last year’s D2 runner-up, who started the season 2–4—has rattled off three straight wins and put themselves back in playoff contention through the automatic qualification route.

With an expanded playoff runway and no byes, we’re in for more surprises.
