UAA Volleyball Championship 2025: WashU, Emory and UChicago Battle
WashU, Emory and UChicago face off for the 2025 UAA Volleyball Championship title. See stats, rankings and key matchups ahead of the tournament.

Even with regular season University Athletic Association (UAA) play wrapped up, the championship title remains up for grabs among UChicago, WashU and Emory.
The UAA Volleyball Championships run Nov. 15-16 in Waltham, Mass. Considering all factors, WashU might just win it all.

UChicago remains unranked nationally, while Emory holds No. 16 and WashU No. 17. Despite the lower ranking, WashU has an X-factor Emory lacks: the ability to turn pressure into points.
The Bears’ 18-6 overall record and .750 win percentage—the highest in the conference—bode well. After losing the 2024 UAA Championship final to Emory, they’re hungry for a rematch. That drive could take them all the way.
UChicago Leads the Standings, But Looks Can Be Deceiving
The University of Chicago tops the UAA standings with a 6-1 conference record, losing only to NYU (1-3). At first glance, the Maroons might appear the clear favorite, but it’s not that simple.
UChicago’s overall record is less impressive at 13-12. They began the preseason ranked No. 20, fell to No. 22 in week one and dropped out of the top 25 entirely by week two.
Tied for second are Washington St. Louis (18-6) and Emory (14-5), both 5-2 in conference play. The pair have stayed ranked since the preseason, holding top-15 spots until the latest poll.
Emory maintained a slight edge over WashU all season—except for weeks three and four, when the Bears briefly jumped ahead. Emory seemed the clear UAA favorite until last week, when WashU topped them 3-2 (25-27, 24-26, 25-19, 25-12, 16-14) on their home court.
The UAA Championship bracket makes Semifinal 2 the pivotal match. If Emory beats No. 6 NYU and WashU takes down No. 7 Brandeis, they’ll likely meet again for a spot in the final. Assuming UChicago beats No. 8 Rochester, the Emory-WashU rematch could determine the tournament champion.
Were UChicago’s Wins Over WashU and Emory a Fluke?
UChicago’s .545 win percentage trails WashU (.750) and Emory (.737), but the Maroons beat both during regular season play.
Defense carried UChicago past Emory, with 13 blocks to Emory’s five in a 3-1 win. Despite the loss, Emory actually outscored UChicago 76-71 and led in nearly every category: kills (60-50), aces (11-8), assists (56-48) and digs (66-64).
Their 3-2 win over WashU looked closer, though individual sets showed wider gaps (18-25, 25-21, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12). Again, UChicago’s defense stood out—82 digs to WashU’s 71—but WashU still led in total points (86-80), kills (75-64), blocks (8-5) and assists (71-63).
In both cases, UChicago was statistically weaker. But their ability to finish strong carried them. If they can harness that same energy, they could surprise everyone in the championship.
WashU vs. Emory: A Match of Momentum and Mentality
Statistically, Emory edges WashU in several key categories: kills per set (13.9-12.9), aces (2.3-1.6), errors (1.4-1.8) and digs (16.4-16.3). But WashU holds the advantage where it matters most—win percentage (.750 to .737).
The Bears have shown they can rally. In their latest match, they outperformed Emory in kills (72-62), blocks (12-6), assists (68-60) and digs (97-90).
WashU knows how to turn it on under pressure, while Emory tends to tighten up in those key moments. On paper, Emory is the stronger team, but WashU’s mental toughness may give them the edge when it counts.
