The two teams were a fair match in scoring stats: scoring around 37 points per game and holding opponents to an exact same 15.13 points per game up to that point.
The home team's lone loss this season came from UNC Pembroke, a team that had been receiving votes in the FloFootball Division 2 Rankings almost all season.
Both defeated West Alabama in late October, but the Argonauts had a bit of an easier time. They won by a touchdown rather than the three point gap that the Statesmen escaped with.

Marcus Stokes Splits Defense, Scores 61-Yard TD To Seal It - 1:43 4Q
West Florida 51 - 38 Delta State
It was all on Delta State to make a huge stop and keep as much time on the clock as possible if they wanted to have a chance.
It all came crashing down as on 2nd and 11, Marcus Stokes split the defense and rushed right up the middle untouched for a 61-yard rush to the promise land.
After an offsides penalty, they decided to go for two which failed and left the gap at just 13.
It has certainly been a day of quarterback keeps—Stokes has 9 attempts for 98 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ames has 12 attempts for 55 yards.
Argos Get Ball With 5 Minutes Left - 2:30 4Q
West Florida 45 - 38 Delta State
You can feel the tension rising across both teams as the margin for error gets smaller and smaller. Delta State was able to piece together yet another long-bomb for a touchdown and to bring things back within reach.
Delta State will have to make a big stop if they want the ball back without a bigger gap in front of them.
On 3rd and 3 at the UWF 36, by far the most important of the game so far—Delta State called a timeout.
Stokes took a keeper to the right sideline and dove for the line but was down with space remaining.
On 4th and inches—a timeout for the Argos right at 2:01.
UWF goes for a rush up the middle and gets the conversion, barely—and that's the two minute timeout.
Ames To Rearden Over The Top For 6 - 7:23 4Q
West Florida 45 - 38 Delta State
On 3rd and 22 (after a delay of game penalty), Ames snapped the ball from the shotgun with Palmer to his right and both receivers to his left shooting straight for the endzone.
He launched a beauty down the middle of the field and Rearden came down with it, an 86-yard pass, in a jumping catch to sprint it into the endzone and bring this game back within one touchdown. It was a carbon copy of the play they tried just two attempts earlier but was dropped after hitting Rearden in the hands perfectly.
He earned redemption with that one.
Field Goal Play Broken Up, Lead Stays At 14 - 7:23 4Q
West Florida 45 - 31 Delta State
To nobody's surprise, the Argos turned to Jay Sharp on the ground to keep the ball moving as the Argos try to ice the game and run the clock out. Over the 9 play, 47-yard drive Sharp got the ball seven times and earned 38 of those yards.
On a bad snap, the field goal snap was dropped and the field goal kicker was forced to pick up before throwing it towards the endzone for an incomplete pass and turnover on downs on the 5-yard line.
Flags Fly As Things Get Loose For DSU - 12:04 4Q
West Florida 45 - 31 Delta State
Flags have started flying with Delta State getting holding call and unsportsmanlike conduct after a relatively clean game up to this point. You can tell they're struggling to maintain composure as West Florida drives the nail into the coffin.
Just Three Plays Later, Tony Newsome Gets Second INT - 13:39 4Q
West Florida 45 - 31 Delta State
On a longshot deep down the right sideline by Ames, Tony Newsome came down with the ball without a Delta State receiver within 10 feet of him to give the ball back to the visitors' offense.
Delta State Starts From Scratch - 14:00 4Q
West Florida 45 - 31 Delta State
Well, this feels like deja vu. From an 18-point lead to tied up to a 14-point lead. This game has had it all.
Delta State has a bit of time but they're going to need to retake control and momentum of this game if they want to maintain their one-loss record.
West Florida INT Into Touchdown On Next Play - 14:10 4Q
West Florida 45 - 31 Delta State
The door is open for the home squad after a muffed PAT attempt by UWF.
Ames will have to channel his early 3rd quarter performance to make it happen, though.
On 3rd and 11, Ames was in the shotgun with one in the backfield, he dumped it out to the right flat but it was intercepted by Tony Newsome and returned it back all the way to the 5 yard line.
TJ Lane rushed it up the middle to secure the touchdown conversion.
The Argos went for the two-point try and easily passed it over the head of the Delta State defense.
Touchdown: Stokes Keeper To Put West Florida Up - End of 3Q
West Florida 37 - 31 Delta State
On 3rd and 5 at the DSU9, Marcus Stokes took a keeper up the middle for a touchdown that was initially called no good but overturned after a coaches challenge.
Their drive ate up half of the 3rd quarter and marched 80 yards down the field over 11 plays.
A bad snap on the PAT attempt led to the holder trying to run it in but was forced out of bounds before he could pass the plane. No PAT to make it just six points between the two.

West Florida Goes On Extended Drive - 2:26 3Q
West Florida 31 - 31 Delta State
Marcus Stokes and the Argonauts have some work to do after the last drive. Delta State has fully seized momentum in this game as the sideline energy has made it's way across the field.
They opened the drive with a 31-yard pass deep to the left to Javon Swinton. Jay Sharp was a solid solution on the ground for the Argos—tallying gains of 3, 6, and 5 as the drive continued rolling down the field.
The Argos have pieced together the longest drive of the game, exceeding six minutes and eight plays.
Touchdown: Delta State Recovers Fumble For Scoop And Score - 8:10 3Q
West Florida 31 - 31 Delta State
Comeback: complete!
West Florida's Ty'Ray Davis fumbled the handoff in the shotgun to Jabari Murphy. Austin Collins scooped it up and forced it into the endzone to tie it up for the home team.

Statesmen Punt, Momentum Stalls - 8:17 3Q
West Florida 31 - 24 Delta State
In a very quick three and out, Delta State found themselves back in punting formation after another overthrown pass by Ames on third. Their momentum from the last drive was seemingly left in the past as they try to finish the comeback.
West Florida Fumble Gives Delta State Chance To Tie - 9:05 3Q
West Florida 31 - 24 Delta State
Marcus Stokes fumbled the ball on what initially looked like another double-digit run for a first down—Delta State collected the ball to give the offense a chance at bringing the score back even.
Delta State Gets Back To Work With Longest Drive, Punts - 10:29 3Q
West Florida 31 - 24 Delta State
Freshman quarterback Garrett Ames and the Delta State offense get back to work, deferring their coin-toss win to get the ball in this very opportune time. Their mission: take their first lead of the game.
Marlon Palmer starts the drive with two short rushes up the middle before Ames took things into his own hands to rush it on 3rd and 4 for the first down.
Nick Clark then provided his own mid-length rushes before another exclamation point by Ames for 10-yards reset the downs once again.
UWF pulled it together and made three solid stops on the rush to finally bring out the Delta State punt unit after nine plays—their longest drive of the game.
Halftime Stats: Delta State Makes Strong Comeback Into The Half
West Florida 31 - 24 Delta State
The Statesmen have battled their way back into this game after the West Florida Argonauts made mincemeat of the defense in the first quarter.
Some special teams chaos helped swing the momentum closer to the home team's favor and with two touchdown drives that took less than a minute and a half each, things are looking much rosier than they were at the end of the first quarter.

West Florida 28 - 24 Delta State
Delta State's has taken control of the game finally bringing things back within reach—a hill they've had to climb since the first quarter.
Ames completed the pass deep up the left side to Curtis Rearden who then stood over the defender after crossing the plane. He was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the kickoff.

West Florida Settles Pace - 2:44 2Q
West Florida 28 - 17 Delta State
It's been an exciting first half of chaotic Gulf South Conference football as these two teams have battled it out and tried to take control. West Florida has largely found most of the success but a few good breaks for Delta State has kept them in the game in front of their home crowd.
They punt it away after a three and out.
On the return, Delta State was called for a block in the back to put the ball on the 29.
Touchdown: Delta State Strikes Back - 5:22 2Q
West Florida 28 - 17 Delta State

West Florida 21 - 10 Delta State
Delta State's defense continues to settle in as UWF was on 3rd and 14 without even reaching midfield.
As Marcus Stokes stepped back to throw it, the pocket closed down quickly and the ball popped out before bouncing off of three different players before an Argonaut brought it down to the ground to take it to 4th down for a punt.

Delta State Pieces A Few Plays Together, Turnover On Downs - 13:49 2Q
West Florida 21 - 3 Delta State
There's still tons of time, and Delta State finally has started to put things together after falling behind by three scores.
Garrett Ames completed two passes in a row—the first for 16 yards to Neno Lemay up the middle and the second deep to the left for Curtis Rearden 49 yards up field to make it all the way to the UWF5.
Unfortunately, after two more incompletions, they turned it over on downs on 4th and goal.

Garrett Ames Lost With Another Three And Out - 14:45 2Q
West Florida 14 - 3 Delta State
You start to wonder why Delta State is still relying on Garrett Ames to make things happen offensively. So far on the day, he's 0-3 in the air and they have only gained 11 yards on the ground despite 9 attempts. There's still a lot of time, though. Here's hoping he can turn things around.
Delta State Forces UWF Three And Out - End of 1st Quarter
West Florida 14 - 3 Delta State
Delta State makes their first big defensive stop, holding UWF to a three and out after a few Marcus Stokes incomplete passes left them on 3rd and 11.
It's been a one-sided affair with West Florida clearly showing up early. Delta State has started to settle but they'll need to find a way to complete plays in the air to close the gap with how strong UWF's defensive line is.
Statesmen Settle For Field Goal After Fumble - 2:42 1Q
West Florida 14 - 3 Delta State
Delta State gets on the board for the first time today after picking up the fumble deep in UWF's territory. West Florida's defense was able to completely stop any further progress, though, which forced the field goal unit to add three.

West Florida got the ball back with a great starting spot in midfield, the 47 yard line. On 3rd and 3, they turned to the quarterback's feet once again—this time Ty'Ray Davis running it to the left for 17 yards and a first down.
On 3rd and 7 just a few plays later, Marcus Stokes was back in the shotgun and completed a pass to Corey Scott who made a nice cut up the middle to open area to gain 17 and move into scoring position.

After a short pass to the left to Tyree Holloway, Stokes found himself faced with the first 4th down of the day.
The Argos didn't shy away though, Stokes kept it and broke out of the pocket with speed to gain 40 yards and bust into the Statesmen redzone for the first time.

Kickoff is Next—Two Players To Watch Today: West Florida vs Delta State
Nick Clark, Delta State
Redshirt freshman Nick Clark has been unstoppable for the Statesmen in 2025. His 11 rushing and one receiving touchdowns make him the single highest point scorer in the GSC.
With double-digit carries in six of the eight games this season so far, including 22 in the last against West Alabama, expect Clark to get the ball a lot today. It will be interesting to see how the rush defense of West Florida stands up against the young talent.

Ja'Kobe Clinton, West Florida
Redshirt senior Ja'Kobe Clinton continues to be a rockstar for the Argonauts on the defensive side of the ball. Earning GSC Defensive Player of the Week in early October, the linebacker is among the best in D2 football. His 15.5 tackles for loss and 6 sacks make him a must-watch player today if Delta State opens up a lead.
Who's Who: Coaching Today's Showdown
Todd Cooley, Delta State
Cooley has been at the helm for 12 seasons and holds an impressive .635 winrate during his tenure. He was quick to take action after joining the program, leading the team to a 9-2 record and a spot in the playoffs after winning the Gulf South Conference title in just his second season.
Kaleb Nobles, West Florida
Nobles earned the head job in December of 2022 after working at Clemson as an offensive development coach. His youth has not been a weakness, helping the Argonauts to a 15-7 record heading into the 2025 season, which is now improved to 23-7 regardless of today's outcome.
