Valdosta State Keeps Hopes Alive With 45-35 Win Over West Alabama

Don't count out Valdosta State just yet. The Blazers keep their GSC and playoff hopes alive with a 45-35 home victory against West Alabama.

Valdosta State may have had an uncharacteristically slow start to its 2025 football campaign, but the Blazers seem to be heating up at just the right time.

Making a run at redemption in the NCAA Division II Playoffs still is a distant possibility, but VSU took a huge step in that direction with a 45-35 win Saturday against conference foe West Alabama. And the final quarter was complete chaos.

It was the first Gulf South Conference game of the season for the two-time defending GSC champion Blazers, as well as their first showdown of the year against a ranked opponent.

A 17-point second quarter helped Valdosta State to a 24-7 halftime advantage at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium in Valdosta, Georgia, and after a scoreless third quarter for both teams, the floodgates blew open.

The longtime conference rivals combined for 49 points in the final 15 minutes, but the host Blazers were able to use a little creativity and some luck to hold off the charging Tigers.

One of the highlights was a double pass from VSU’s junior quarterback Jameson Holcomb to senior receiver Council Allen to redshirt sophomore tight end Joel Houedenou for a 36-yard touchdown with six minutes left in the game. That put the Blazers ahead 38-28 after the extra point.

West Alabama answered quickly, getting as close as 38-35, but that’s where the luck started going Valdosta State’s way.

First, a Spencer Arceneaux pass to graduate receiver Dearrius Nelson deep in UWA territory was caught, but knocked loose, allowing senior defensive back Dallas Robinson to scoop it up and return it for another Valdosta State touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, a low liner from junior kicker Ethan Eddins was recovered by Valdosta State at midfield, and the Blazers were able to run off the final two minutes for the season-changing victory.

West Alabama topped Valdosta State in first downs, rushing attempts, rushing yards, receptions, plays and total yards, but the Tigers were slowed by two lost fumbles, the intercepted pass and 98 penalty yards.

UWA had 329 rushing yards and 223 yards through the air for a 552 total on 77 plays, while the Blazers totaled 395 yards on 60 plays – 254 yards through the air and 141 on the ground.

Holcomb led the VSU passing attack with a 19-for-29 performance for 254 yards and a touchdown. Allen handled things on the other end of the passes, catching eight balls for 136 yards and a score.

Senior running back Eric Watts and junior RB Corey Reddick Jr. had 82 and 65 yards, respectively, for the Blazers, and they both had a touchdown.

For West Alabama, Arceneaux was 22 for 34 for 223 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.

Arceneaux entered the game second in the conference in rushing (63.9 ypg), passing (224.6 ypg) and total offence (288.4 ypg), and he added another 104 rushing yards on seven carries. Junior running back Brayden Jenkins led the Tigers with 133 yards and a touchdown on 24 attempts.

Up next for West Alabama, which is done with conference play for this season, is a Nov. 8 visit from Lincoln University (California).

Valdosta State will look to keep its title hopes alive at home next week against Delta State, before ending the regular season on the road at West Florida.

A Look At The New Gulf South Conference

Since reaching the Division II title game last year, where they fell to Ferris State, the VSU Blazers have been enduring a bit of a nightmare 2025 campaign that has seen them fall out of the national polls and get left out of the season’s first regional rankings.

However, with the new look of the Gulf South Conference, and a format changes to the Division II postseason, Saturday marked the beginning of a new season for Valdosta State.

For the first time, all Division II conference champions will earn automatic spots in the playoff bracket, while the other 16 spots (of 32) will be awarded via at-large selection.

The latter might be unlikely for VSU this season, but a third-consecutive conference championship certainly is within reach for the Blazers, who are 4-4 overall this year, but 1-0 in conference play.

Ending the season with wins against Delta State and West Florida would guarantee the Blazers the conference crown. It’s possible, but it will be a tough task, as West Florida entered this week as a top-5 team nationally, while Delta State was just outside the top 10.

The best news for VSU is that UWF and DSU are playing each other this week, which will break the tie atop the four-team GSC standings. Heading into their showdown, both teams are 1-0.

West Alabama entered the day ranked No. 21 in both the FloCollege D2 Football Rankings and the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll, but the Tigers likely will disappear from both following the loss, which was their third in a row and will leave them winless in their 2025 GSC slate (0-3).

UWA now is 5-3 overall after a 5-0 start to the season.

In the latest edition of the FloCollege D2 Football Rankings, three of the four remaining GSC teams earned spots in the top 25. West Florida is locked in at No. 4, Delta State moved up two spots to No. 11 and West Alabama is hanging on at No. 21.

With the success the conference has enjoyed over the years, none of that should be shocking.

The jaw-dropping part is the team that’s missing completely, Valdosta State, which played for the NCAA Division II title last season and has been a top contender for most of the last 25 years.

Another important note is why the Gulf South Conference only has four teams.

The change in the Division II landscape that led to four teams leaving the GSC was the return of football to Conference Carolinas for the first time since the 1974-1975 school year.

Last season, the GSC featured eight teams, but at the end of the 2024 campaign, Chowan, Erskine, North Greenville and Mississippi College left the conference. The first three now reside in Conference Carolinas, while the MC program is defunct.

Since 2000, three of the four programs left in the Gulf South Conference have played for the Division II national title a combined 11 times, winning six. Valdosta State claimed the trophy four times, while Delta State and West Florida each have one.

About West Alabama Football

West Alabama has seen steady improvement in recent seasons, going from 5-6 in 2022 to 5-5 in 2023 to a 9-2 campaign in 2024 that ended with a 37-34 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne in the opening round of the Division II Playoffs.

The magic continued for the Tigers in 2025, at least at the beginning, with five consecutive nonconference wins to start the year. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as well when conference play started, though UWA did hold its own against a pair of teams that are a combined 15-1 this season.

West Alabama’s winning streak ended with a 23-16 home loss to West Florida on Oct. 18, and the damage doubled, again at home, with a 41-38 loss to Delta State on Oct. 25.

Perhaps getting back on the road is the right remedy for the Tigers, who are 3-0 away from home this season.

West Alabama’s strength in 2025 seems to be on the ground.

The Tigers lead the GSC with 189.1 rushing yards per contest and rank third through the air with 224.6 ypg. They’re third in scoring with 35.9 points per contest but last in scoring defense, having given up a league-worst 27.3 points per game.

Senior quarterback Spencer Arceneaux is second in the conference in rushing (63.9 ypg), passing (224.6 ypg) and total offence (288.4 ypg). He has been named the GSC Offensive Player of the Week three times.

Defensively, sophomore linebacker JT Hooten leads the conference in total tackles with 60.

UWA is led by first-year head coach Scott Cochran, who has enjoyed success with Division I powerhouses LSU, Alabama and Georgia.

UWA Quarterback Spencer Arceneaux Can Get It Done

We talked about West Alabama ranking higher in the rushing stats, but Spencer Arceneaux also can make things happen through the air. He is 102 for 188 this season for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Here he is connecting with Houston Johnson in the Tigers’ 41-38 loss to Delta State last week.

About Valdosta State Football

For the most part, Valdosta State has been consistently successful, including Division II national championships in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018, along with runner-up finishes in 2002, 2021 and 2024.

The Blazers also own a record 11 Gulf South Conference titles and have won or shared five since 2018.

Unfortunately, since COVID-19 canceled the 2020 season, VSU has struggled a little bit with transition.

When Tremaine Jackson took over the program for the 2022 campaign, after going 12-2 and reaching the title tilt in 2021, the Blazers stumbled to a 5-6 effort and sixth-place conference finish.

They did rebound, however, going 25-3 over the next two seasons, including a pair of conference championships.

In 2025, with the much smaller GSC roster, Valdosta State has the opportunity to overcome the transition blues and make a huge turnaround all in the same season.

This year, the Blazers are being led by first-year head coach Graham Craig, who was the offensive coordinator for the team’s run to the title game in 2024.

With just four of its 22 starters back from a year ago, the squad’s 3-4 start certainly is understandable.

If the team’s performance last week in a 35-24 homecoming win over former conference foe North Greenville is any indication, things could be falling into place at just the right time for VSU, which will close the season with its three conference games.

That means there’s still a chance at a three-peat and another year in the playoffs.

A noteworthy performance last week from senior defensive lineman Mark Robinson earned him the D2Football.com Player of the Week nod and GSC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors. He had nine total tackles, including four for a loss on four sacks, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry.

On the other side of the ball, freshman running back Shawn Paschall was named GSC Freshman and Special Teams Player of the Week for a performance that featured a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Oh, and to make Saturday’s showdown with West Alabama even more special, a win for VSU would be the 350th in program history.
